The Refugee is a new artist straight out of Sac-Town. He has always been very good at writing, and picked up an interest in secular rap music around the age of 11. At the age of 14 he was introduced to Holy Hip Hop better known as Christian Rap.
He started writing rhymes, inspired by T-Bone's Bone-A-Fide album and Taking Gospel To The Streets vol. 2, which were the first HHH albums he purchased. However, it was rather hard for him to record his rhymes, not having any beats or a program to record them with. One day, he wrote a rhyme about the books of the Bible in order, and decided the lyrics were too good not to record. He met up with a guy in the youth group, Solid, whom he knew as Paul Rogers. Paul had been recording songs for a while, as well as producing them. The Refugee showed Solid the lyrics he wrote, and a couple months later, he was sitting in front of a computer recording his first song.
After this, The Refugee downloaded his own demo of FL Studio, and ever since has been in love with writing and recording his raps.
The Refugee is on the lookout for shows and promotional opportunities. Currently he is unsigned. For booking: (916)204-3629
Why this name?
My youth group at Christ Community Church is called The Refuge. Since I attend The Refuge, I am therefore called The Refugee.
The second meaning to my name comes from Christ being my safety and my Refuge, therefore also making me The Refugee.
Do you play live?
I do play live at local joints in Sacramento, California. Check me out sometime. I'll keep ya posted.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet makes it a lot easier to get your music out, and get your name out as an artist. It's accesible to anyone, therefore anyone can listen to anyone's music, which allows great and easy networking.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would sign a deal with a record label. That way my music could be purchased in stores, and many people could hear the Word of God through Hip-Hop. I can provide a great alternative.
Your influences?
The Lord Jesus Christ is my number 1 influence. As for artists that influence me, mostly local Gospel Rappers, such as Sevin, Minister RMB, Q-Heem The Redeem, R&R Ink (Anonymous, Chosen, and Solid), J-White and Lee Majors, 202, K-Oss, B-Glory, Soul Hustle, C4, Mesenja, J-Hood, Hog Mob, and Cross Culture.
Favorite spot?
Siikk Sac! The 916!
Equipment used:
For home recordings I use a laptop, and a mic that I bought from Wal-Mart. I record it using Sony Soundforge, and my producer, Solid, uses the program FL Studio to make beats.
