Why this name?
Discantus is the term given to the second voice in the birth of the polyphonic music. At the same time, the main voice started to be known as "Firmus", or "tenor.
The initial Discantus, had a much wider freedom, almost improvised... only defined bu certain rules. This was know as contrapunctus "alla mente".
