I compose music for piano and/or orchestra that is intended for listening, playing or as background to film. My inspiration is drawn from many sources; I particularly love the sound of modal harmonies, and also have a fascination for new ways to modulate within modes. I love music almost as much as I love my major source of inspiration -- found in nature, hiking through the woods and mountains near my home. I am also inspired by my music buddies, whose friendship, warmth, and common purpose are invaluable to me.
Why this name?
It's only my name, nothing fancy.
Do you play live?
Sometimes I play a piano piece for art buddies; usually I put an orchestral composition on a CD and play it for people.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
This is going to cause an explosion of creativity. It's going to knock serious (classical?) music back onto its feet and start it running again.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'm not sure that's the direction I'm headed in.
Band History:
I've composed for piano since I was a child, and spent many years after music school improvising and scribbling down the best ideas. With the advent of the latest technology, I have been braving past my resistance and loving the results.
Your influences?
I have a long background of studying classical music for the piano, but enjoy many kinds of music: Bartok, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart,Ralph Vaughn Williams, modal choir music, other choir music, innumerable film scores, world music, some forms of jazz, anything with heart or humor.
Favorite spot?
The mountain trails and open space near my home in Boulder.
Equipment used:
I use Garage Band to create my recordings on an iMac, and also write scores for those pieces on Sibelius. In addition to the Garage Band Sympony Jam Pack, I use Garritan Personal Orhestra sound samples. I enter most recordings on a Roland Fantom-S88 synthesizer keyboard for a more "live" sound.
