The turn-tablelist, airwave master, the Xklipsive one, or as known to many, his one name that will punch your ear drums like a Mic Tyson fist if you happen to be in Malawi at anytime. Yes, the completely unavoidable Kenny Klips has the dee-jayin skills that leave other dee-jays green wit envy. Born Kenny Wako, Klips made his debut on Malawian airwaves with FM Power 101 based in Blantyre Malawi. He was however doing a lot of dee-jaying before that especially in Los Angeles(U.S.A) where he was based for quite a while. within a short time frame, Klips became a house hold name in Malawi due, with his trade mark voice and unusual approach to being on air.
Klips collaborated with Dr. Gwynz on "The hip-hop drill," givin' the already ecstatic listeners a two hour dosage of both local and international hip-hop. Local hip hop artists were encouraged to record more locally produced hip-hop, with Klips pioneering the exposure of such talent to Malawian masses. The result, and entire generation of rappers who existed came into lime light. A lot more music was produced and made it's way into many peoples home and ears. In a nut shell, there was a sudden boom in Malawian hip-hop! Malawian now heard music from their fellows Malawian rappers and from all over the country. Klips even inspired the formation of Blind Vision (the first group Jinx founded with Native K). among others were, The KRT hailing from Lilongwe, Black Squad affiliates, southern Kaos and the already famous Real Elements and Erasto. Within a year's space, FM 101's studios had featured a chain artists on live show which included, the Real Elements, Erasto, Ice Kepp, Dominic one, Catrace, The Black squad and Blind Vison just to name a few. Malawian hiphop was in rude health. Klips worked on making the Blind Vision a success and indeed it was! In July 2002, The Blind Vision became the second duo to drop a full length album after Real Elements.
Todate, Kenny Klips who is the only mix DJ in the country is doing even more to elevate Malawian hip-hop. He was recently on an African tour where he spread the news of Malawian artists and beats like wild fire. Now at the ever growing JOY FM, in Limbe, Klips is/has been the project co-ordinator for the new and much anticipated Jinx "Enter the Muna" album released February 2005. .Klips is also working hand in hand with "People Serving Girls At Risk," which is an NGO raising awareness of the dangers and risks that face young females on a day to day basis. He has also helped pronote the Public Image first album called Image Effect
Band/artist history
Rush Records Malawi/Muna Productions-Uk
Rush Records was founded by Pempho Kafoteka (a.k.a Rissah), Kenny Wako (Klips) & Jinx a.k.a Muna in late 2004.
Rissah who hails from Blantyre-Malawi had actively been involved in the hip-hop movement within Malawi forming Southern Kaos, one of the most hiphop to emerge from Malawi. Southern Kaos released a couple of hot singles and recorded an album that was however never officially released. They however enjoyed massive airplay and gained popularity among the local underground scene. In the 2003 Rissah came to Uk for further studies resulting in the dispersal break up of Southern Kaos.
Jinx/Muna from Lilongwe, Malawi was the founding member of the Blind Vision, one of the most known acts ever to emerge from Lilongwe. Like Southern Kaos, Blind Vision was well known within the Malawi under ground circles after releasing a string of hot singles. They eventually released an album As the World Turns before disbanding, which was well received among the critics. Whilst in Uk, he eventually met with Risser.
The meeting of the two led to the formation of a good bond. Rissah had heard a lot about Jinx whilst still in Malawi and so had Jinx about Rissah and Southern Kaos. The two decided to join forces forming Public Image with Double j (JJ) and Young Cuz Piper (originally from Southern Kaos) releasing one of the most Malawian hiphop loved albums Malawi has ever witnessed; it was Image Effect. The Jinx/Muna produced album led to the formation of Muna Productions now run by Jinx in UK and remains the part of Rush Records that is responsible for the creative side through music production.
Kenny Klips is probably the most important Dj on Malawian soil. Kenny Klips appeared on the Malawi scene on FM101 Power instantly winning fans throughout the nation. He hosted the Hiphop drill along side Dr. Gwynz and made it his mission to promote the local Hiphop scene, which included both Rissah and Jinx through Southern Kaos and Blind Vision respectively. His willingness to help local rappers changed the entire scene and more rappers/producers eventually started coming out of their closets. To date, he is at Joy FM where he continues to promote and showcase local talent through The Tunnel dubbed Malawis best hiphop show. He has since released his own album in February 2007 and is responsible for the scouting of and exposure of talent for Rush Records.
In December 2004, Rissah returned to Malawi to establish Rush Records officially, teaming up with Kenny Klips who both Jinx and Rissah had been in constant contact with and released Image Effect, Rush Records first album. 2005 saw Rush Records Rush records/Muna Productions going heavy on the scales through the release of Jinx solo set Untitled which upon release changed the course of hiphop once again.
To date, Rush Records is the biggest hiphop label in Malawi with a string of releases under the belt.
