Band History:
Donella's life story

I want to bring to the world my passion, its music.

I consider music the center of my world and I’m in the world because of it.
It’s not my fault. I was born an artist, THANKS GOD!!!!

I'll tell you the story......

My father, NELSON is a singer, it's in my genes, not only that he was such a great artist and got very popular in the Dominican Republic , back in the 70's in fact all my family is involved in music in some way. He even named me after a famous Italian opera singer, that's how sure he was i was going to be like him!

I inherited it , My uncle JUAN is a violinist, and all of my brothers and sisters are related to art, actors, dancers, D J's and musicians, even our kids ( Victor,15 and Bethsy, 10)are artistic they would spontaneously dance in a meeting or family reunions and they are constantly singing or humming a tune!

It’s in the air, or inside our blood??

My grandmother MARIA, was a piano teacher, and she would be brewing the coffee, early in the morning and listening classical music to Frank Liszt, or Mozart or Beethoven depending on her mood that day, i personally felt in love with Chopin.

I also took classic ballet lessons (for about eleven years) and the classes had classical music too.

I just discovered the magic of moving at the same time with the rhythm and that it was a fulfilling action and it felt great. I was only 6 years old at the moment.

I grew up in a world of music, wonderfully created centuries before and i consider my self so lucky because of that.

Take it from me, it’s so relaxing....... haven't you noticed music have influence on your mood?

That’s my goal; create a good feeling in your heart when you hear my music.

Well, going back to my roots, the Dominican Republic or La Hispaniola is an island in the middle of the Caribbean , that gained in richness as the mixing in it's races , we had the Indies and the Africans and later on the spanish. All of that mixed together and created a delicious blend called Merengue, is as sensual as waltz and as aggressive as Tango and as happy as Rock and Roll, it makes you go crazy, it's very difficult not to fall in love with Merengue once you've heard it and more difficult not to dance at the contagious rhythm.

I'm planning on spreading our hot and tropical music, because it will also spread our culture, and being able to do that thru something i love so much like music, it's thrilling!!!

After some time my mother, PALMIRA, (who is an angel (diseased in 1995), didn’t know what to do with three kids sitting at home after school, so guess what she did?, she enrolled the three of us in music lessons.

I chose the guitar, it seemed easy to carry , my sister, Monica., chose piano, she never finished, but she got good and she still plays very good, and my brother took both and percussion, can you imagine the noise inside the house, Monica, on the little piano me in the guitar and my brother, Nelson, would grab a drum, it was like a mad house but boy it was so damn fun!!

We used to imagine a whole orquestra right in our living room, and would perform for others like the nanny or any relative, oh by the way we got better and it was seriously taken, like we knew that we were going to be doing that for a long time ( at least me ), anyways we also took other classes, and i stayed in ballet for 11 years, i wasn't so good at it , but it teacher me how to move on stage , i never thought it was going to be so useful. At the moment i felt frustration because i wasn't that tall or skinny like the rest and i never was put in the front, but i kept learning as much as i could!!

Well, my brother ended up been an actor and a drama director (he graduated), my sister is the most efficient executive secretary in the world , and me? well, I chose to be a Singer, like my sweet daddy.

He used to take me to T V studios with him and later on my father had his own T V show, Musica y Aplausos (music and cheering) every Sunday, and most Sundays he took me there and i got to meet important and popular artists at that moment or they would simply be seating in our table, dinning , so i got used to see the big stars , isn’t that wonderful?

I was going crazy just singing for my school church on Sundays and one graduation party a year, i knew i had to perform to feel alive, as soon as I finished high school ( my mother would kill me if I didn’t) I started working as a singer, i was only 17.

The whole world was different now and couldn't believe that I was making four times my mom's salary just for doing what I love the most: SINGIN!!

I was young and naive, but one thing was for sure in my mind : this is going to be what I’m going to do for the rest of my life!!
SING MY HEART OUT!!!!!!!

And i've been happily doing that until now. I've gone a long way, rock bands ( Top 40 and Siglas), big musical reviews (Tropicalissimo y Fabuloso Caribe), the most important T V shows in my country, i even performed in Berlin, Germany representing my island! And i have performed for two of our presidents, i feel very gratefull!! I love all kinds of music Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Instrumental, African, Reggae, requeton..... well you name i listen to it , but i have my favorites like: Sade, Sting , Alicia Keys , Joss Stone, Steve Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Straisand, Juan Luis Guerra AND MY GREAT MUSICAL LOVE: ALEJANDRO SANZ , he usually makes my day, every day, with his music, just can't live without it!!

Now i'm very proud and happy of been able to record my own music, and take all my experience and passion for music to everybody, "Soy Antillana " is like all of that together.

I was born an Artist! Thanks God!!!
