MELBOURNE based musician Sam Pollard started playing the piano at the age of five and never looked back. As well as writing all of his own music, Sam plays piano and keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, cornet, trumpet and trombone, and sings in various styles.
Raised in the UK but relocated to Australia, Sam's musical influences include the best of British rock as well as classical and jazz styles. Sam showed promise from an early age, winning trophies for composition and music recitals. Classically trained, with a degree in music and live experience ranging from classical to rock to big band jazz and improv, Sam's excitement for music shines through in his live performance as well as his recordings.
Sam's earlier recordings received radio play in Europe and Australia and an online distribution deal in the US. He has now completed a professional studio recording of his album World of Difference with his band and producer Jimi Maroudas at Sing Sing studios in Melbourne. The success of Sams songwriting focuses on lyrical storytelling and these recent recordings showcase his strong vocal talent and multi-instrumental ability.
Recent achievements include the inclusion of the song What to do What to say on two compilation albums in Australia and the UK, and success in the 2008 UK Songwriting Contest with Blah Blah reaching the finals in the Rock/Indie category (top 30 out of 6200+ entries) and What to do What to say reaching the semi-finals in the Pop category.
Sams music crosses a number of genres from acoustic singer-songwriter to alternative rock and has been compared (amongst others) to Robbie Williams, Queen, Ben Folds Five, David Blunt, Muse, Crowded House and Lior. He is enthusiastic and is busy developing a fan base through marketing and performing his music, he is fully committed to becoming a success.
Why this name?
It's just my name!
Do you play live?
I've played live with lots of bands, had fun one day when a couple of girls came on stage and decided to dance with me when I was trying to play guitar and sing. Was quite interesting...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It gives everyone the opportunity to sell their music without having to get a record deal first, which is great. Though there is a lot of music available now so getting known is pretty hard because of all the competition.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, if the deal was right
Your influences?
Queen, Muse, Robbie Williams, Beethoven, Big band jazz, Stereophonics, Snow Patrol, Keane, and loads more
Favorite spot?
Melbourne
