Subversive is a four-piece band that hails from Arlington, Va. There is no easy way to label the music except to describe it as: dissonant guitars held together by a raw, invasive beat.
Why this name?
SUBVERSIVE: tending to subvert : having a tendency to overthrow, uspet or destroy- “hypocrisy is a vice subversive to manhood”; esp: intended to bring about the overthrow of a recognized institutional order. In the mind-numbing wave of pop trends and soulfully deviod complaint rock songs, we are compelled to be SUBVERSIVE.

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It gives every band a Fair Playing Field where a band from nowhere VA can get a fan base anywhere in the world and sell albums just like the big labels. We see it now as the big labels are crying that the internet is hurting there Biz.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes we would, its always good to have strong tour support and marketing behind you.
Band History:
After nearly six years under different identities and members, Subversive grounded itself in garage rock. When original members, Paul Makarov and Angelo Tsimaris, were still in high school. Tommy Milosavich(a guitarist of the Deftones vein) joined the band with his best friend Pat Joria
as bassist and the ensemble was complete. Tommy and Pat quickly aligned themselves stylistically and added a reverberation of artful tones and rhythms. After defining their musical style,SUBVERSIVE slowly embraced a sincere fan base and has played many venues with countless local acts. The four-piece secured legendary
sound Engineer Steve Albini, known best for his work on Nirvana’s “In Utero”, for their latest album, “Antihero” - another offering of paradoxes and passion.

Star Chaser Records 10 song CD
Subversive sounds like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and STP all rolled into one. That might sound easy to dismiss, but they do it so well---and that's the key. This is grunge-era rock at it's finest, and there's no complaint there. The only issue might be: is this 10 years too late?
I guess Creed may be carrying that torch now, but Subversive is too good to be compared to them, and they seem to hold a better grip on the basic elements of the sound---lead singer Makarov can growl with a passion that is rivaled only by Cobain or Vedder. The band uses dynamics well, careening along at full volume only to bring the blast down to a whisper. And to top it all off, the disc was recorded by Steve Albini. Need I say more?
While I wouldn't say it's original, I would say that Subversive is one of the few post-Seattle bands that really gets what the grunge movement was all about.

Next up on the agenda for this week is an Arlington, Virginia four-piece set out to subvert, destroy, and upset the rest of the world. No, I'm just kidding. However, this band out to rock, so we better watch out. Anyway, let's get on with the music. Shall we?
One very interesting note about this CD is that Steve Albini, one of the more well-known producers/sound engineers, recorded this album for the band. It's kind of funny because you can practically hear Steve singing through and under the music. The CD opens up with the track "Slider" which in my opinion sounded like a mix between Tool, Nirvana, and Shellac. The only difference between those bands and this one is that Subversive sounds a little more radio-friendly that Tool and Shellac. You can tell that these guys are going for the System of the Down and Deftones look and sound after you listen to the song "Otherwise." For hard rocking music, it ain't half bad, but remember, that's only half. It's really kind of strange when you try to put your finger on exactly what this band sounds like. It's rock, it's punk, it's metal. It's a whole lotta everything if you ask me.
Overall, I thought this was a decent CD. Not a super standout, but definitely worth listening to and worthy of checking out. If this is your kind of musical thing, then I highly recommend this one.
