I don't have a band. I'm just a vocalist that loves to sing love songs. I would love to have a band that would grow with me so that we could tour and grow and create together. Take the world by storm. But no... I'm just a vocalist that sings love songs. Right now...I think that's okay. Don't you?
Why this name?
I wanted to keep it simple. Like Jazz. Nothing to flowery. Just classic.
Do you play live?
I've played some local clubs..a few clubs in North Carolina..where I'm from. But now I'm just recording. I would love to play the smokey clubs like the ones back in Harlem when Sarah and Ella were hot....I would love the play the dives..I mean, I don't discriminate when it comes to playing clubs. Just as long as I can sing and the people love it....I'm down
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet is the best thing, next to videos that has happened for the artist. It gives the artist more control and world wide exposure. It also allows you to meet and groove with other people who are trying to get it on just like you are. Getting a e-mail from someone in Australia who has seen your site and heard your vibe and wants to work together is wonderful. Without the internet, chances are you would've never met.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, but I would be more particular. I know how I want my music to be perceived and I wouldn't want to jack that up chasing a dollar and then 5 years down the road realize that what was once a passion is now a chore....one you've got to keep doing the way they say until the contract is up
Band History:
Haaah! I have the basic little black girl growing up in church story...you know..singing since I was 4. I sang in chorus because my parents wouldn't pay for a instument for me to be in the school band, and singing was free...ain't that some crap? So I was in chorus all my school years. In college I was the leading vocalist for the top Jazz band at East Carolina University for about two weeks. I withdrew because the school wanted me to do Opera. Even though I like Opera, that wasn't what I was there for. I wanted to know everything that there was to know about Jazz. The standards, the history, the scatting...all of that. I wasn't going to pay to sing Opera and then learn Jazz on the side. My vocal coach wouldn't even coach me once he found out I made the Jazz band. "Singing Jazz is detrimental to your voice", he says. I shoulda punched him in the mouth,(just jokes..you believe me?). But seriously, I punked out. I should've stayed and made it work....so I came to Atlanta with $80 and a magic dream. I've recorded several singles and performed at charitable events and some open mics. I've been at it off and on for a while, but my gut tells me my time is now.
Your influences?
Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald all the wonderful Jazz legends. Even in R&B, Gladys, Anita, Chaka anyone who sang good music.. Carly Simon everyone who wrote and sang words you could feel
Favorite spot?
Even though I've never been, I pick Los Angeles just for the possibilities. New York maybe would be up there too. This may sound crazy..but pretty much any city that has a bus line (smile). But as far as my favorite spot..I really couldn't pinpoint one spot because I love nature. Anywhere there's water, mountains, steams, lakes, brooks, trees, breezes, grass, and dirt. That's pure peace
Anything else...?
My main goal is to help bring Classic Jazz to a younger audience...maybe not even focusing on a audience but bring it to the forefront again. It has always seemed to me that most people look at jazz as music for older people...the stuff you listen to when you want to relax and go to sleep..or slowly die or something...lol. I want to take part in changing it. I want to sing the classics..the standards and make it modern without compromising the pure sound of classic jazz. If I have to starting with a newer jazz feel..kinda like this track and slowly infuse the standards, that would be cool. Mama, I just wanna sing!...and smile alot.
