Why this name?
We used to be called WE ARE THE PHYSICS CLUB AND THEREFORE EVERYTHING WE SAY IS FACT, but it was too long to fit on posters and it made less sense if we shortened it. It's a terrible name, none of us like it, but at the same time we enjoy it just because it's so bad. We wanted the name to be a wee inconvenience as much for us as for other people and the fact that there's a similarly named band floating around just makes it all the more awkward. We were quite fed up with easily packaged, convenient band names where your popularity is dependant on how well you can sell your band's brand.
Do you play live?
To Iceland and back, from Copenhagen and London Stansted. For your weekly (and free) fix of origami, karate, haiku, manga, otaku, karaoke, and sake, go to the Japanese Culture Festival at the University of Iceland on Saturday afternoon. Turning Japanese? We really think so.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Digital technology has breathed life back into the independent writers and given them a chance to get their work heard by the wider community. These opportunities were slipping away under the control of money Labels.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Make sure that you understand each and every issue that will come up in the negotiation of your record deal so you can make educated decisions. Remember ... the first 5 pages of a recording contract will give you everything and the next 95 pages of the agreement will slowly but surely chip it all away unless you understand the loopholes. The more you know, the more you'll make.
Band History:
I was born in East Fremantle in Western Australia in 1964. Prior to 1997, most of my life was spent on the move. I served in the Army for thirteen years, worked as a stockman, farm labourer, horse breaker, computer programmer, I.T. manager and most recently office manager for an Aboriginal Land Council. I have seen a lot of Australia and finally settled in a place that feels like home, where Christine and I breed Arabian horses. I have always liked writing but didn’t seriously start until 1989. My passion is ballads, and I see myself more of a folk writer than anything else. My words will lend themselves to any gene, mostly country/ country pop/ country rock. If push comes to shove I can play a passable chord progression on my guitar but I prefer to let composers with real talent and feel for music make great words greater songs. Although I have not yet been commercially published I have had some success at competition level.
Your influences?
Son House, Bukka White, Charlie Patton, Rory Block, Blind Willie McTell, Tommy Johnson (a big influence), Roy Bookbinder, and Johnny Winter to name a few.
