Not a band.I am a songwriter who has been in bands but I tend to use other musicians to help me realise and develop my songs.
I have been writing songs and making music all of my adult life. I am now a middle aged man who prefers to eat a nice slice of cake than have a wild night out. So stay away all you hedonistic hussies!
Why this name?
No band name but I do occasionally use The Celestials as a band name. Also, Lotus Blue, Torn Curtain and The Wild Mutations are other non de plumes I have toyed with.
Do you play live?
I play live every day in my bedroom. Without trousers usually.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has.It will not destroy the major labels but it has made them have to think laterally about how they promote their artists and how to service the wants and needs of modern consumers of music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
You don't need to these days. Distribution and promotion is all you need. And a lot of goodwill too.
Band History:
I have been writing songs since I was 16, largely inspired by David Bowie, The Beatles and any other songwriter who can master that strange alchemy of great words to a great melody. My first 100 or so songs were mostly rubbish imitations of my listening habits but I got better and by the time I was 19, I had written probably hundreds of songs or at least lyrics.
In my twenties, I played in bands, the most successful being The Flaming Mussolinis,
who were signed to CBS in the mid to late 1980s. We released two albums and five singles. I was the main songwriter in that band. Although we had no major chart success, I was amazed to find that there were plenty of people who remembered us when I set up a band site on myspace.com.
Since then, I have kept writing songs, released, a solo album and taken a ten year sabbatical from music to sort out my life as I needed to make a living! I did of course still write the occasional song during that time.
I have recently started to write songs again and after years of not really committing myself to finishing anything, I have written two plays with songs and scripts.
I simply love music and it is something that stays with you even if you try to ignore it. My ambition is quite simple: To someday make a good living from what I love to do: write songs.
Your influences?
Melodic influences: Lennon and McCartney, Brian Wilson, David Bowie.
Lyrical influences: Lennon, Lou Reed, Smokey Robinson and Bryan Ferry.
Favorite spot?
Bangkok. I love the chaos of it and the Thai people are beautiful, gentle people who make you feel good to be alive.
Equipment used:
Just guitar and occasional badly played piano.
Anything else...?
I am currently developing a musical I have written.
