This is L.A. a.k.a. LANSTARR, member of the production team Cut Time and member of the band Dirty Bath Water. More of my songs are available on my official web site LANSTARR.COM.
Why this name?
LAN are my initials and a STARR is what I am. All caps for that bold/large effect. Two "R's" to stress the STARR.
Do you play live?
Yeah I play live with the rock band I am in called Drity Bath Water. Check out their web site at DirtyBathWater.com .
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It is good for promotion, especially for underground, independent, and unknown artists. But it has killed album sales and the record business as a whole. We are now in the era of ringtone rappers and hit singles, not coherent albums. This is the 30 second Youtube generation. The general public is inpatient. They want it now and in bite sized pieces. So it has changed the business model and big business has had to come up with a different forumla's for make money -s uch as building a bands brand equity for the sake of cross marketing... and also selling ringtones and such.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes I would. I want to expose my music to a greater amount of people, but I do not want to be trapped in a bad situation and I will not change anything about my music or how I present it.
Band History:
I started playing trumpet at age 9. I began to write music at around 10. Started making hip hop music at around the age of 13 or 14. Been doing it ever since. I love making music electronically and playing live. Started playing live in a band at age 22. But I am really a behind the scenes guy and would rather produce a hot track then be in the limelight. I simply play live and rap so that I can be a better producer and coach other artist more efficiently.
Your influences?
Be Bop to Hard Bop to Funk Fusion Jazz, Dark Orchestral/Classical music, Drum n Bass, Dub Reggae, 90's Hip Hop...
Favorite spot?
Long Island New York, where I'm from. And my studio the Lion Sage Lab down in the south side of Queens.
Equipment used:
I have a couple hardware synths, old school but digital. I have a couple soft synths and sequencers. Some outboard gear and some software sequencers and DAWS. I created my own software synths too (see my website).
