AUGUST is gone, here's SEPTEMBER! Fall weather already rearing its chilly head here in Berlin. 7 NEW tracks up for you this month, from the split CD with LAST DAYS IN THE BUNKER: "Killer Pill". This is the first time I've made music like this, so rhythmic and keyboard based(and I even use the synthesizer, YIKES!). Every song took me to a different place, and I'm pretty glad I went there, in every case. I don't know what to call it. It's not techno or dance music, I don't think, it's somewhat dubby tho many times the dub acts as an intro that soon falls apart, becomes something else, maybe more vicious like in "My Fear". These are mostly instrumentals except for "Killer Pill", "Grip", a basic acoustic number, and "Lump Of Coal", which has a backwards backing track..."Fall Into the Hole" has my little son Ernst Wilhelm doing vocals, check them out!! The song is a basic noise-fest for me based around a loopy riff and lots of feedback, until the end where a song appears. This happens often with these songs. Hope many of you can stick around for those sudden bits at the end that develop from solid repetition, because I think it's damn worth it for that sudden "trip to somewhere else"...guaranteed. I guess it's a time of few words, this batch of songs covers a rough period of transition. The thought of writing words was totally OUT. And the songs work for me because of that very inarticulateness, their ability to project my feelings with sounds, an audio landscape of sorts..

"Strut"is still up, in new longer version. Yeah it describes the streets but also that special feeling that I get from people in East Berlin, a certain indefinable "something" that the westies just don't have. LONG LIVE PRENZLAUERBERG!!!

ABRAHAM RODRIGUEZ is the founding member of URGENT FURY, a New York City Hardcore Punk band(1982-1992). In ten years, the band played out with groups like A.P.P.L.E., MARGINAL MAN, US CHAOS, FALSE PROPHETS, VIRUS and others in the old New York scene. Put out a couple of demo tapes, a split single and a 10" album. There is an URGENT FURY webpage:
www.myspace.com/urgentfury616. He is also the author of 4 books, including his latest novel, SOUTH BY SOUTH BRONX from Akashic Books.

Why this name?
Abraham: That's a long story. A long time ago I had a dream with this guy named Kurt...

Do you play live?
Abraham: The band has not played as such. I have been carting around the old acoustic, though, doing open mikes, playing parties...the thing about forming a band for me is that after so many years of being in bands, I refuse to form one unless I can truly say I love to play with these people. It has to be with people I really get off playing with. "ROPE BURNS" is now approaching the point where the right people are stepping in to make the music real...but it has to be fun, a joy to play, and playing live is always a blast...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has totally revolutionized the relationship between bands and the public. SOUNDCLICK enables me to browse for music, to find it on my own---don't need radio or DJ or record company to tell me or force-feed me. It is truly a punk-DIY concept, and bands can bring their music right to the people...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Maybe. But are such things really necessary?
Band History:
It was punk music that made me pick up a guitar. I was a rock kid all the way through but when punk came, it seemed the music I was waiting for all my life. I formed a group in 1980 called WHITE RIOT, and two years later I started URGENT FURY. My commitment to FURY lasted 10 years and by that time I was yearning to do other things---my band had become very limiting---my influences were always diverse and wide, rock, pop, heavy Beatles & Stones phases, reggae, even some country & folk music. my style, melodic though sometimes I find myself in rebellion. After breaking up FURY I disappeared into my 4 track. That little machine brought me a grand freedom & that's a freedom I enjoy RIGHT NOW and even better to enjoy that with people!!

Your influences?
The songwriters who really turn me on: Anton Newcombe(Brian Jonestown Massacre), Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Kim Deal (Pixies, Breeders), Tobin Sprout(Guided By Voices), Bob Dylan, Tim Wheeler(Ash), Robyn Hitchcock, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, (this list will continue to grow, it's just the start, man)
Favorite spot?
I've lived in Berlin now for eight years and am so in love with this town. It just keeps giving...New York and Seattle are also close to my heart...I also loved Amsterdam..
Equipment used:
For this newer stuff I have moved from old 4-tracks to my MacBook Pro's GARAGEBAND music studio. I play guitars, bass, piano, synthesizer, melodica, some harmonica, bongoes and a few other percussive items, and an Alessis drum machine.
Anything else...?
