Donavan Tucker (Genius The Misfit) was brought up in a small, gritty, urban neighborhood called the Country Club Crest, known for its murder rate and heavy drug trafficing in the early 90's. According to Donavan, the name "Genius" is symbolic of what he wished to achieve as an emcee. He knew that if he gave himself such an ambitious name, it would inspire him to actually live up to it. And the name " Misfit", simply reflected the personality he claims to have carried with him his whole life. Genius The Misfit read every credible Hip Hop magazine that came out, tracked down some of Hip Hop's most classic album's, and feverishly studied them. Among some of the album's studied were Jay-Z's "THE BLUEPRINT", Eminem's "THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP", Nas's "ILLMATIC", and The Notorious B.I.G.'s "READY TO DIE". Genius The Misfit spent 3 years creating what would be his classic debut into the Hip Hop industry. Take the universal appeal of Jay-Z's "The Blueprint, with the superb clever wordplay from Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers Lp", and taking a cue from Nas's "Illmatic", there are 10 tracks, no filler, and no features. At only 20 year's old, Genius The Misfit ready's himself to make Hip Hop history. All of these element's, backed by a story million's will relate to, come together to create a truly original and innovative album the world will soon know as "THE MISFIT". In the meantime, he is putting the finishing touches on what is quite possibly the greatest mixtape ever created. The mixtape is called "TRUTH SERUM", and is due out sometime in early 2007.
Why this name?
My name is basically two persona's. "Genius" is the writer. "The Misfit" is who Genius is writing about. Put them together and you get one truly unique name, Genius The Misfit.
Do you play live?
I did alot of shows in 2005/2006 for a showcase called Urban Idol. The feedback from the audience in every show I did was tremendous. But then, unfortunatly, the show turned out to be a fake. I recently just got back from an LA audition for "Showtime At The Apollo". If a "good" opportunity presents itself, then im there.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Honestly, to some extent, I think the internet has created alot of problems in the music industry, especially Hip Hop. But I wont get into negatives. The good is that it provides sites like this for people like me to get exposure. Im learning that more and more.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
That is my ULTIMATE goal. I want the whole world to hear what I have to say. An indie label (from my understanding) doesnt have all the resources for MASS promotion and MASS distribution like the majors do. Dont get me wrong though, alot of indie labels are great, and every deal a major throws at you isn't a good one. But, good major label deals do exist...and I want one.

Your influences?
I am influenced by great artist (Jay-Z, Eminem, Lauryn Hill), but what truly inspires me is the lack of creative and meaningful music plauging the modern day. Today's music fails to grow and push the boundaries of music can be. Instead, most Hip Hop artist today manipulate the younger generation into thinking that what they do IS hip hop. Yes, it can be called hip hop, but technically speaking, its not. Its called, "Rap". The whole world raps now. Alot of rappers in the "Rap" catorgory would protest that Hip Hop has evolved, and that people like I have to live with it. I refuse. Rap is a big kid who keeps pressing the rewind button on Hip Hop. Who wants to keep watching the same movie? The truth is we are not progressing because of "them". People front like that's not what's going on. I hate it.
Favorite spot?
My favorite spot in front of a keyboard or a microphone. Put me there and im good.
Equipment used:
I have a Korg Triton TR 61. Its a nice piece of equipment to make beats on.
