Music is a great hobby and a way to express yourself. I've always enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to the Blues masters. Eventually, the hobby became the main focus and I soon found myself travelling around the world. Many experiences to enrich the soul doing something interesting and unique makes life memorable...
Why this name?
I go under a variety of band names. Blue Top was one. Now, I use my own name for solo performances, Joe & the Special Guests for the band gigs, and whatever else...
Do you play live?
Yes. I really like to play live. These days, I don't play enough and want to gig regular again. I've performed around Asia for a long time. And, have played with some pretty interesting people at just about everywhere. I suppose being in a recording studio during an earthquake qualifies as a special moment. Europe sounds fun. Would like to tour in the USA. Had planned a tour of the South, near New Orleans, but was cancelled due to the Hurricane... Any booking agents out there, at the moment?
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The net has changed the whole concept of the music industry. Video killed the radio star in the '80's and the internet has buried the music corporate executives in present day by taking away the power and putting it directly in the hands of the artists. Years ago, bands would tour hard and long, at great expense, to promote their music. While the industry dictated the terms. Now, by uploading a few songs, videos, or podcasts, etc. bands can reach everyone on the planet instantly. And, control the business themselves. The internet has provided a great alternative so EVERYONE can reach out, no matter what business you do. That is the good side.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
A good question... Today, the labels only look for artists who are already established. They no longer nurture an artist for a long period of time. If I were at the point where I sold enough CDs & downloads, played live performances in upscale venues, and maybe composed for a film or TV producer, I would be sought after by major labels. I wouldn't really need them because I could do it myself and still retain my own copyrights, etc. and stay in control. Unfortunately, not many artists get to that point of independence. They opt for the security of the industry. And, signing with a label doesn't mean success...
Your influences?
I've liked playing guitar as a hobby and listening to Blues music. BB, Albert King, Clapton, Knofler, Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hendrix, Page, Gary Moore, and everybody else were great influences.
Favorite spot?
The beach, the mountains, any major city for the entertainment, and the countryside for the peace and quiet. I like to SCUBA dive, as well. Have made some very interesting dives...
Equipment used:
The backline is Marshall for the guitar and Ampeg for the Bass. I use a Schecter guitar. They stay in balance better than the stock Fenders and Gibsons on the market, it seems. Anderson pickups. Yamaha Bass at the moment.
Anything else...?
For, Solo shows, the situation is much different and the focus is on vocals to create the mood, with the guitar mainly as accompaniment. I cover classic Blues and Rock numbers, often using slide guitar to enhance the electric guitar performances.
