KHAMA IS THE BADDEST FEMALE LYRICIST IN THE GAME.
Khama is her stage name and her style has the “Khama” touch. Khama was born Khama Tate in St. Catherine, Jamaica W.I. She grew up in Kingston and did most of her education there. She attended Bridge Port Primary, Hope Valley Experimental, St. Cecilia Preparatory and Queens High. Khama’s family followed her mother’s dream of a higher education and migrated to Florida, because of her mother’s scholarship to acquire a masters in communications, in 1990. Khama started McNicoll Middle towards the end of 8th grade. Khama graduated Hallandale High School where she played with the idea of rapping while performing in the band and attending chorus classes. She tried out for talent competitions and met with Baby Face’s producer who invited her out to his studio. Khama’s mother had a strict belief in education first and that music was just a past time and so that invite was never taken advantage of. Khama being the baby of three children always felt she had the most to prove and so she kept her head in the books and kept her grades up. Khama went on to Nova Southeastern University where she worked at the radio station on campus ( Nova Southeastern University Radio) to earn the volunteer hours required by her scholarship and get a feel for the other side of the music business. While working to support herself through college Khama fell trap to the “I can make more money if I didn’t go to school” bug. She took up odd jobs, even rose to the general manager level at fast food establishments but still writing and dreaming of music. Khama was introduced to a local party D.J. in 2000 and began going to the studio and taking her craft seriously.
This versatile West Indian flavors her music with a little Caribbean flavor as well as a strong New York type realness and a hard-core delivery style. She captures in the music the reality of the times, and merges this with a little of the past and raps into the future at times. The self-effacing, self-proclaimed “STARR OF THA SOUTH” has graduated into the breath of fresh air the game’s lacking. Khama writes her own lyrics and entertains the idea of writing lyrics for other artists as well. Khama started her own record company at the beginning of 2007 which has taken up a lot of momentum and gave birth to a production company. Khama will produce and write r&b, reggae and hip hop for other artists along with her company partner. She’s got her mom’s velvet voice and showed her musical interest as young as 8 by mouthing tunes of Bob Marley, keeping up with the latest dance hall trends and entering poetry and essay contests. Khama is generation X’s Queen Latifah or Mc Lyte. Her songs Starr and I Do among others have been getting air play on numerous stations ( WAVS 1170 am, WJFP.COM and W305.COM to name a few). Khama is a hip hop artist with a reggae song as a single, that should say a lot about her versatility. Khama has been on The Rap Game on 99 Jamz with Big Lip Bandit and Super Cindy. She has entered numerous talent shows including the Larry Dogg and Big Lip Bandit talent search at The Warehouse, the Mike Sherman Talent Contest and the 106 and Park Spring Bling Talent Search to name a few. Khama has a lot of shows under her belt as well. Her debut cd The Original Album Starr is truly an offspring from the first track to the last all breathe life back into “hip hop.” Khama’s love for music goes beyond the pen and paper, she is a young artist that has a true appreciation and respect for the veterans that came
before her. Every line she spits is profound just listen and watch out!

Khama: “Can’t Fall In Love”
“I had a dream like martin/ we were fighting like X/love isn’t simple/ after sex it’s stress/ Wondering if you love me/ and if you gone stay/ or you gone/ do like my pop’s/ and just run away/Will you be gentle with my ego/ He know/ so do you have to brag/ We know/ Love is pain and it makes me sad/ When you try on purpose to make me mad/ Then try to kiss away the anger/I know you/ but sometimes you are such a stranger/ and what’s strange/ I don’t know if I love you enough to put my heart in danger/ yeah I’ll eat from your plate and drink from your cup/ I aint co-signing no Rangers/ I aint signing no papers/take your eye off my paper/take you’re a** from my safe/ get you’re a** out my place/ yeah we cool/ but this was another mistake/ I suggest you be gone by the time I wake/ I just can’t!”
-Khama, “Can’t Fall In Love”
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SONG?
I was just thinking from a woman’s point of view. A lot females think they are nothing without a man and a lot of mother’s perpetuate that. If you are a certain age and not in love or with kids something is wrong. The way some of us feel is I like you, I’ll sleep with you but you need to be going to your own house in the morning because I am not ready to get married. Yes a lot of it is that we have issues about our own parent’s marriage.
WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT AFTER SEX ITS STRESS?
It is. First you wonder should you give it away and then when you do, you wonder should you have given it away. Your dad in most cases stayed with your mom for a long time and if he left then why wouldn’t this guy that you don’t truly know yet. You worry what he’s going to tell his friends. You wonder how he truly feels because in most cases men do not share their emotions and you wonder how long before he’s looking for something else.
YOU FEEL MEN TRY ON PURPOSE TO MAKE WOMEN MAD?
I know they do. Like Neo said they get turned on for some reason when you get upset.
THEN THEY TRY TO KISS AWAY THE ANGER?
Yep. They think all is well with a kiss or sex.
HOW DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE AND THEY CAN STILL BE A STRANGER?
Listen, I like Mary J. Blige. I went to see her in concert just the other day but she has a hit song off the Waiting To Exhale Album called Not Gone Cry. Eleven years out of my life and what happened? I watched the movie, did you? He left that’s what he did. He left for the secretary now which wife out there thinks that her husband is going to do that after being together for eleven years? It is a movie but it is true life.
DOES THIS SONG MEAN THAT KHAMA CAN’T FALL INLOVE?
No. I have been married and so I have been in love. But for now I’m in love with my music. I’m not bashing love or men. Most men truly love you when they say that they do but the dating game has not changed over the years. They do want to hit that before they can truly say that they are in love with you and they do want to tell their friends about their conquests. In a perfect society I woman would wed a man and then have sex and live happily ever after, but in reality us sisters have careers just like the guys do and are increasingly not looking for long lasting relationships for more reasons than just the fear of getting hurt.
DO YOU THINK GUYS WILL BE OFFENDED BY THIS SONG? OR THE PUBLIC WILL THINK THAT YOU’RE PROMOTING THE WRONG THING?
I am not promoting anything. Will guys be offended? I don’t know. Why should they be? The song says nothing to bash men. It is no doubt the feelings of a woman in society today and it is in no doubt happening in society today. What are our mother’s promoting with their depencies on relationship and our fathers teaching us by always walking out on the sanctity of marriage?
