We play a kind of hardcore punk with ska influences, that we like to call skacore . The music we create in The Mediocrities seeks to explore relevant themes through fun and interesting music. We wish to voice our unusual, analytical opinions on politics, society, and popular culture in a fashion that people will actually want to listen to.

A few issues of particular interests are the complete unfairness of United States foreign policy, the weak public education system in this country, the degeneration of the messages of alternative music through commercialization and mainstream interest, and the negative attitude and apathy being bred in today's youth culture largely by a simplistic, overbearing popular culture. We strongly believe that everybody who watches MTV is an asshole.

To learn more about our thoughts on these and other issues, listen to our music.
Why this name?
The name "The Mediocrities" is foremost an ironic statement on the lack of outstanding features in most bands. We seek to play music that is both lyrically and musically impressive while not losing touch with fans of the genre and always keeping our originality.

"The Mediocrities" also reflects how easy it is in a huge and confusing world to become depressed at our inherent mediocrity. So often it seems that one voice is lost in the storm. We aren't here to tell you that you are actually special and amazing, but that it is possible to be special and amazing. Our band name is a statement not to give up hope.

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Music sharing is a great way to share unusual music that may not otherwise be published. It also undermines, in a small way at least, the huge overbearing corporate world of music which has made so many alternative styles stale and boring.

However, we should all be careful. A lot of the music that people upload is quite boring itself, and it can be hard to wade through all the mediocrity (get it?) that exists before finding the truly amazing underground music. We intend to keep the music that we share on the internet to the high standard that we believe our fan base deserves.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Obviously we would have to talk about it, but probably not. In any case, it is unlikely that a major label would sign a record contract with us.

As a side note, we were horrified when the Pittsburgh punk rock band Anti-Flag signed a deal with Sony Records. For a band that sings outspoken songs like "Underground Network," it would be difficult to devise a greater hypocrisy.
Band History:
Colton and Jonny ("Radical25") have been jamming out since Colton started playing bass. They developed an interest in ska and punk rock and The Mediocrities were formed to experiment in this sound. After a long series of truly terrible drummers, we are quite happy with Molly, who doesn't play very well but who has the right attitude. And she's getting better.
Your influences?
Colton and Jonny are both diehard Goldfinger fans, and our sound reflects this deep respect.

Other than that, our influences include (in no particular order):

Bad Brains, Operation Ivy, NOFX, Abduktio, Reel Big Fish, AFI, Bad Religion, Bulb/Periphery (check out Bulb's Soundclick page!) Anti-Flag (before they signed with Sony, of course), Rancid, Modest Mouse, System of a Down, M.U.T.T., Rage Against The Machine, The Clash, The Guilty Parties, The Sex Pistols, They Might be Giants, Simon and Garfunkel, Metallica, Weezer, Victor Wooten, the Violent Femmes, and Propogandhi.
Equipment used:
Jon plays a low end Fernandez guitar that he both loves and hates with a Korg AX-10 effects pedal. He amplifies his guitar and vocals through a 200 Watt Kustom KPM7250T.

Colton plays an inexpensive Dean bass through a Galien Krueger cabinet with a lightning blue Ashdown head. He does not believe in effects.
