Singer/songwriter from Seattle. Piano and guitar and singing, acoustic pop/rock.
Why this name?
It is just sort of under my nose, being my name from birth.
Do you play live?
I am trying to get to where I can play everywhere and play music for a living. Every time people come out to see me and seem to know my songs is a special moment. Sometimes I hear my music and say, "That's pretty good", but I guess I generally don't think about it, and then I'm really surprised when people are enthusiastic about it. I write from the heart and hope other people can relate to my words and melodies.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Changes everything. Way less money for the artist, but a lot more exposure. In fact, it might not even be less money, because a lot of people get to hear you and will maybe buy your album. Maybe it's just less money for big labels, which seems like a good thing, I suppose.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably. Most artists work pretty hard to get anywhere, much less just at the point of making money. Seems like major labels might treat you badly, but they just plug you into their huge supersystem and everyone gets to hear what you do. I wouldn't miss out on that opportunity, as much as I would love to be indier-than-thou and claim that I woudln't jump at the chance. Not that major labels always make you "big". I've had friends on major labels where it seemed like an indie label might have helped them more.
Band History:
I sang and played guitar for Tribute (starting when I was 14... my career has gone backwards, as this was my only band--so far--to receive commercial--not just college--radio play), Sofie Tucker, and Little Hand of the City... Now a solo artist, releasing a new album in 11/06.
Your influences?
Beatles, Bob Dylan, Rufus Wainwright, Sondre Lerche, Elliot Smith. That pretty much gives me away.
Favorite spot?
Seattle, probably. Love NY and SF as well, SD and LA aren't bad either.
Equipment used:
A 1950's Wurlitzer electric piano (heavy, and only one tone, but I love it, and it's one of my main current instruments), a 1968 Yamaha acoustic (back when they made good instruments, in my opinion). I play most instruments through a 80 watt Twin Reverb w/ 2 X 12" speakers.
Anything else...?
Hope you like my music, and more importantly, I hope you write me when and if you do like my music. And join my mailing list! I'll prolly be playing your town soon. :)
