A project of "Industrial" based explorations.
Why this name?
It is a play on a passage from Liber Al Vel Legis by Aleister Crowley. '..and it shall become full of beetles as it were and CREEPING THINGS sacred unto me.. these slay, naming your enemies'
The original joke with Creeping Things is that since the Beatles have already been slain then I'm next, so maybe I will become famous through proxy.
Do you play live?
I have been gigging a little. In the last few months of 06 I played keys for ELECTROCIDE, a short lived project between myself, Erin Black, and Brian the Red of Dead Center. WE played 2 gigs and practiced maybe 5 times. Since the start of 07 I have performed a live improve noise piece at International Noise Festival in Miami and am starting to play around N.Fllorida.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Hopefully corpratization of music will go the way of the zeppelin. The 70's ruined music in my opinion by the creation of super labels and an over saturation of pop. With the new medium more bands and solo artists can have a broader range of coverage to get better recognition or a fan-base of like minded enthusiasts who would otherwise never hear them. I applaud the home producer. Not everyone will agree but I feel the use of P2P file sharing makes more people aware of the band and helps to draw larger audiences to see them live. Though I know at the same time it is revenue that is lost due to less sales, so merchandise and gigs are more important. In a way I also think this might be contributing to the more theatrical creativity of modern bands wanting to put on a better show to draw their listeners. So it's a catch22 less sales but more recognition. And besides I'm anti-corporate and would love to see Sony or Geffen take a hit as they give more money to their lawyers than their artists.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
no.. maybe.. depends on how you define Major.. see above. But a good distributor would be nice. Are Nettwork, Ant-Zen, or Cleopatra considered major?
Band History:
I first used Creeping Things in a tape-loop based noise project in Austin,TX in 98 and when that fell out I kept the name. One day I realized there is no plural to my band and decided to change it to Thing and somehow added the E and capitalizing like a schizophrenic CReepINgthinGE creates CRINGE.
Your influences?
oh god... well, I'd have to say that Skinny Puppy and the Swans have always been there. My musical taste is varied; though Industrial, Powernoise, and EBM have been the music I've been listening to mostly for the past few years. Lately the use of distortion on the rhythm track has been my conquest.
Emotionally I find I am geared towards wanting to express frustration, depression, and stress. Lyrics I write tend to be about the failures of human interaction or the shallowness and hypocritical nature of people. I know.. being negative sux.. but it fuels me.
I can say I am also influenced by environmental sounds and want to get one of those mini recorders to keep on me at all times. I ride a motorcycle and the drone of the engine and the thoughts while flying along can trance me. I come up with lyrics (that I forget) and Beats and/or melodies (which I also promptly forget!)... I need a mic in my helmet!
Favorite spot?
Austin,Texas by far. It's just the coolest city with the most number of creative people I have been in. I lived there for 5 years and can't wait to move back.
