Number one, downloading music is not only faster, cheaper and immediate, but with the revolutionary iPod, there is no more need for CD's. If there is no more NEED for CD's, and people stopped buying CD's because they could download music ANYWAY, needless to say, the CD becomes extinct.
Since the CD has become extinct, places like TOWER RECORDS went out of business, because they lost their demand. Since there are no more places selling CD's, Record Companies and Labels no longer have places to push their records on.
