Who am I? I'm the next big thing to happen in music!! Lyrical, revolutionary and creative, Khali is a breath of fresh air from the average rapper and a new sound for the south.
Why this name?
Khali is the name that was given to me at birth. My mom is a genius!!!!
Do you play live?
I play live where ever I get the chance. Most of my performances have been in Louisiana and Texas. I will travel and perform if it is financially practical.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet is changing the industry in more ways than one. First of all, musicians are now capable of letting the entire world here there music without international distribution. This is revolutionary because it gives someone with a home studio and recording skills the capability of becoming a "super star" in cyber space. This also eliminates the need of an artist to try and promote there material the old fashion way. Numerous web sites give artist the capability to self promote themselves and cause a buzz that is heard in the electronic world. Secondly, the musician is now capable of selling the music to a world wide audience without the use of a distributor or a record label. Useful tools like Pay Pal allow the artist to sell material and see immediate financial gain from it. You cannot leave out the fact that again, this is on a world wide scale! Never before in human history has this type of this been possible. We have yet to see what the internet revolution will produce as far as artist and companies are concerned but most likely it will be something unprecedented. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that the internet revolution is going to affect Major Corporation’s financial interest in the music world. They have every right to be nervous because there is no telling where this new invention will take commercial music. The tape recorder changed the game drastically and now computers will change it totally.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
In these days and times it is almost foolish to sign a recording agreement with any label. Recording labels rarely offer artists fair deals. Therefore it is in the best interest of the artist to create there own records, distribute them on there own and make all the profits themselves. Personally I would only sign an agreement with a record label if the agreement is fair for both parties. Today's artists have learned from the mistakes of the artist before them.
Band History:
Khali's first official start in the record industry started at age 19 when he wrote and produced his first project entitled "The Embryo" (1999) released under an indie label called Darkside Records. The album showed that Khali was a charismatic, imaginative and lyrical artist. Shortly after, Khali joined a group called the Presidential Playaz based out of Tennessee. The group released their first project entitled "They Don't Know" (2000). It received a small amount of success but was merely a set up album for their sophomore project entitled "2001 The Anthem" (2001) which ultimately gave the group there most success. Turmoil began to develop among the group members and they never released another project. Khali continued his career by joining forces with another young prodigy named Daryl Hill also know as Hotep. They created a group called Th-Amenisty (pronounced: the ministry) and released the underground acclaimed project entitled "Ragnarok" (2002). After many attempts to shop for management, distribution and radio play Khali went back to the drawing board. He realized that he needed to create a buzz for himself. The product of that thought was his second self released project entitled "Seize Tha Time" (2006). "Seize Tha Time" is truly some of Khali's best work to date. The lyrics and music production is a combination of gut felt oration and jazz/funk/soul fuzzed together. Khali's subject matter is social commentary relating to everyday situation all people face. Khali is rare because his music deals with reality in such a way the listener can relate easily to what is being said. Songs like "When U Die Where U Go" and "Young and Black" take the listener on a journey with a revolutionary. When this emcee gets his chance to display himself to the world it will be a refreshing experience for Hip-hop music. And there is a possibility that he may even change the game.
Your influences?
My musical influences are rap's earlier emcees Ice Cube, Scarface, Tupac and a lot of others. Old school soul, R&B and Funk have played a major influence on my sound. Jazz has also impacted my music greatly. Artists like Najee, Grover Washington Jr., Spyra Gyra and others have enchanted me with melodies.
