Besides the obvious answer to this question, conceptually it means unknown artists have a free platform on which to present their music globally.
In reality it has changed nothing for the artists you pass walking down the street every day.

I've just been developing my instrument skill throughout the last 10 years, bands in high school, then just my solo project for the last 3 years.
