Mz. Toya aka LaToya Howard is a 18-year-old phenomenon, born in the Air Force, and raised in Milwaukee, WI. She has been singing since she was able to talk. She was born into a musical family with a mother, father, and brothers who all can sing.
Why this name?
Umm, I try to conduct myself with alot of dignity and respect for others. Mz. Toya is a sign of respect and thats what I want.
Do you play live?
I sing at alot of different places, mainly for fun, but now that im a college student i have to make my money just like everybody else. I used to sing throughout my high school years: on the announcements, homecoming footballs games, basketball games, and many other events for school. As far as big events, I sung at Hoopfest 2006, its a annual basketball tournament that we have in Milwaukee, where several high schools with good basketball creditials play in a huge arena, sometimes on t.v. I sung at The U.S. Cellular Arena in front of about 20,000 people, singing the Star Spangled Banner. I sung at a number of weddings, funerals, and graduations. Im used to singing in large groups and small groups make me nervous.lol
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has made a way for people all across the world to feel, at least like they have a chance at making it. To have your music on the internet, is somewhat better than having it played in your local city or state. Why? Because more people have access to it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, I would if I could still go to college. At least, part time.
Band History:
Apollo Night--August 17, 2001(A Dedication to Alexis Patterson)
The Italian Community Center--Juneau Highs Senior Banquet
Summerfest 2005
Hoopfest 2006
Your influences?
My musical influences are: Shirley Murdock, KeKe Wyatt, Stephanie Mills, Brian Mcknight, and Donny Hathaway.
Favorite spot?
My favorite spot or city would have to be West Palm Beach, Florida. I went to Florida one year to sing at a Christmas concert at a local YMCA for less fortunate children.
Equipment used:
I use a microphone, maybe a piano-player, a instruments and/or maybe nothing depending on if the person I am singing for wants me to sing accapella or not.
Anything else...?
I sing to have fun. The music i write mainly is the story of my life. I write about everyday events and things women or men my age go through. My goal with my music is to have a good effect on someones life, musically. Think about it, without music, life would be boring, dead silence. So I plan to put a feeling of relief in my music, because lifes so difficult all ready, why be so harsh...I basically want the world to love my music and I want my music to sink in the skin of its listeners and to make a change in the world.
