DAMA Stuff - 20th Newsletter!!
Hello again everyone. We just got back from Metal Fest in San Antonio, Texas. Sorry we are so late with this newsletter but it took a while to recover from the trip. When your playing a heavy metal festival you gotta drink the part..er, I mean act the part. This was our first real road trip. We left on Wednessday, November 3rd from San Diego, California and headed East. It wasn't long before the palm trees were gone and replaced by the sand dunes of the desert (which by the way are still hot in November). We were cruising in the new Motorhome that Eterniti Records was HUGE enough to buy for us to make this all happen. Actually its a used Motorhome with a cool 70's feel to it (its an 82 - about 27 feet) and other than squeaky brakes, runs great. Of coarse the best thing is having a bathroom (although its really small and after dumping it a few times, we figured out quick it was for emergencies only...LOL) which after visiting some of the rest stops along the way, we were VERY grateful for. So we drove 24 hours straight through from Cali to Arizona to New Mexico and then to Texas where we arrived in San Antonio about an hour before we played our first show (nice driving Pepe!!!!). We ended up at this cool little club called Wackys. The name ended up foreshadowing our entire trip. Especially Redmug. Poor Redmug learned the hard way that Murphy's law on the road (what can go wrong will and then some!). It seems our soundman plugged in the Bass Amp wrong...really wrong. After clearing out the whole club with a feedback that can only be compared to a recording of fingers scratching a chalkboard as load as an AC / DC concert. Probably took two years off my life. Anyway, next thing ya know...blown amp fuse and no replacements. Thank God for direct boxes. It turns out that the guy somehow arched the electricity in the amp and all the tubes fried at once. Pretty impressive feat really...not very cool though. Fortunately, we were using the backline that was provided at Metal Fest and did not have to use our own stuff. So after rocking Wackys in front of Death Metal bands Vile and Internal Bleeding (we were pretty suprised at showing up as the only non-Death Metal band that night..lol..in spite of the names all the people we met we're very cool), we found our hotel and finally got some well deserved rest. The next couple days before Metal Fest we spent in the excellent company of Toad's family who we cannot thank enough for the hospitality. Especially the excellent food! And thanks to Toads cousin Ricky Guitierrez who you may have seen on a recent Showtime Comedy special. The guy was the funniest dude any of us have ever met and we will let you know when his new Showtime special is going to air. So we finally made it to the show and we're stoked to meet all the cool people from http://www.knac.com (an excellent internet radio station for heavy music - don't forget to request them to play DAMA!). We then made our way backstage and we're content to hang out in the shadow of the 2 tour buses that Glen Danzig had brought with him (Hatchett actually got to say hey to him briefly but for the most part he hung out in his ride all day - and who could blame him!). So 5 minutes before we hit the stage, Redmug snaps a bass string (the backups being in the motorhome in the parking lot). The guy has maybe snapped a string twice in 6 years and here we are 5 minutes before Metal Fest wondering why now is time for number 3...LOL...a little stress was evident..but Danzig came to the rescue..or actually their production manager who happened to be doing some stage settup came to the rescue by magically producing the perfect bass string that Redmug needed. Scary moment..lol..but all is well that ends well. We rocked the show and made a good enough impression that we were invited back on the spot to every Metal Fest in the year 2000 including the 18th annual huge Metal Fest in Milwakee. We were really stoked that our music was received so well by the crowd (especially since 95% of the bands there were of a Death Metal / Black Metal style) and by the other bands. We didn't get a chance to enjoy Danzig's show though because we had to be back at the Dragon Fly by Monday Night to play the Black Lounge so we left Texas about 8pm that night and headed back to LA. Just in time for Redmug who accidently left the toothpaste cap off and stuck his toothpaste hastily back into his bag of clothes that morning. On the bright side, the dude did smell minty fresh the rest of the way home which was a big improvement we all felt. He didn't seem to find as much humor in it though...go figure. We ended up getting back to LA at 5am in the morning on Monday. Unfortuantely trying to park a Motorhome in Studio City in the rain at 5am on a Monday morning is utterly stupid and we decided it would be worth a parking ticket to sleep (turns out that Pepe convinced the city workers that our motorhome was fine where it was in exchange for some DAMA posters and a CD - always cool to get new people listening to DAMA
. So we slept all day and arrived at the Dragon Fly to rock. Unfortunately Redmug's bass was not. To top of Red's week, he got to play McGiver with a plastic backstage pass, a holepuncher, a screwdriver, and some scissors. Don't ask me what the dude did but he figured out how to get his bass to work and we rocked the Black Lounge again for our hometown crowd that made the trip to LA (serious dedication for a Monday night !!!). All in all, it was a great trip with some wacky stories and we rocked Texas. We should be headed out that way again in March when we hope to play the South by Southwest Music Festival. In the meantime, we had this week off and travel next week to play a show at UCSB in Santa Barbra on Tuesday, November 16th and then return to play Dream Street in San Diego again on Saturday Night, November 20th. We are working on setting up a free concert in the sand dunes of Glamis for Saturday the 28th (Thanksgiving Weekend) and then will be headlining Caines in Pacific Beach, California on December 4th and that should close out 1999. So thats the scoop on upcoming shows and the rundown of the Texas trip (some parts were censored to protect the guilty).
