I am E qou'ni Wah'ya I play the Native American Flute, I also sing in the same context. I have been playing for three years and am working on my first CD. I play this music because it is apart of my family history. Though at this time I am non-confirmed by Native American Law, this is only temporary. I hope I am able to finish the research some day. According to my Father and my Grandmother I am descended from Cherokee and Chocktaw tribes. I play because I feel my connection to this world and it's beauty. I play from my heart, My music speaks of nature and life. People that listen find my music soothing, and soft. I worry when I play in public if I am bothering others, yet I have no complaints as of yet only compliments. My hope for those that listen are that for one moment from this busy life on Earth, one can find peace and enjoy a little piece of my heart.
Why this name?
E qou'ni Wah'ya means River Wolf in The Cherokee Language. Of all creatures put on this Earth I am drawn most to the wolf. Water is my sanctuary, when beside moving water I feel the strength of the earth, the sound of water even rain can put me in a trance, I find when in the presence of a river, creek or brook, even a lake I play my very best.
Do you play live?
I am a member of two flute Circle groups in my area. The "Spring Cypress Native American Flute Circle" And the Greater Houston Native American Flute Circle. We play at live events. I am a new member and I will be playing for the first time to a gathered audiance on Oct. 7 at Bear Creek Park in Houston. Then again in November at Armand Bayou in Pasadena Texas for their Fall Festival. The last live event will be in December at the Houston Heritage Festival Downtown.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It allows for those who can't afford to live in the music industry regularly, to be heard. Those who don't know squat about labels and contracts, have that chance to share with others, people other than family and friends. There is alot of hidden talent out there The Internet just opens up the world a little bit for them.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If someone thought my music worthwhile it would be an honor. Without gimmicks and scams. Whether you think I have potential or not it doesn't matter to me, I enjoy playing just for the hell of it. It is who I am.
Your influences?
I am into all things Native American, My music releives stress, promotes peace, is off the cuff and from the heart, it requires no formal music instruction, unless you want to learn sheet music.
Favorite spot?
The woods by moving water.
