Numbs is a high-energy hip-hop group made up of 3 Emcee's(Gunnar McKell, Mark Dago & Rooster) and Two DJ's (Shanty & Rick).
Why this name?
It originated from Numbskullz and then
Numbskillz when we first started. We shortened it to Numbs. We thought this was fresh because no "rap" groups at the time (or since) had a name similarto this. We thought it was appropriate due to where we come from
(Utah).
Do you play live?
All the time. One of our strengths is our live set. It's great to connect with people who listen to you and rock the party with
them.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Internet revolutionized the music industry. Major labels and independents now have resources available to them that weren't around even 5 or 10 years ago. It's awesome to think that people in your own city, on the west coast, east coast or in Switzerland could all be listening to your music at the same time. This medium will continue to grow and morph and I think as
an artist you have to evolve with the change and embrace it.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes. Distribution is the key. The more your music is accessible everywhere the more opportunities you will have open to you.
Band History:
Started circa 1994. First LP/CD "Metaphonic" released in 1996."Anesthetic Episode" dropped in 1998 (WAX only). "The Word" (LP/CD) was
released in 2001. Numbs are currently working on an EP (Wax/CD) for a FALL 2003 release (no title as of yet). Besides these gems...Gunnar McKell
has released 2 solo CD's..."Build To Climax" (1999) and "Burn-Turna-Kit"(2001).
Your influences?
1989 Classic Hip Hop (Gangstarr, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, EPMD, A Tribe Called Quest, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Boogie Down
Productions, De La Soul, etc). Stevie Wonder, Prince...Some current Rap Groups: Jurassic
5, Heiroglyphics Camp, Outkast, Dilated Peoples. Other current stuff that is Gooood: Little Brother, Foreign Legion, Some of the Eastern Conference artists, Some of the Def Jux artists, etc.
Favorite spot?
city/state)-Bay Area...great music culture and
atmosphere. Also, UTAH...SLC, Provo, Ogden, etc (home sweet home).
Anything else...?
