The Rubrics blur the boundaries between Appalachian traditional music, science fiction and the ""what if?"", all expressed through odd "instrumental combinations". Having wrapped up work on their soon to be released CD "Monkey Cat Blues", the band is on a much needed sabbatical in Winona Minnesota currently doing critical research for future work.
Why this name?
A rubric is a guideline or a standard. Ironically, we hate rubrics.
Do you play live?
We play live around the Southeast Minnesota area.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has allowed the survival of and access to 'niche' music... Music that appeals to a small audience of loyal followers, not to the generic mainstream.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If we could keep total control without having to follow the "rubrics" needed to be mainstream.
Your influences?
We draw from an eclectic source of material: The Incredible String Band, Pearls Before Swine, Richard Farina, Doc Boggs, T. Rex, Iron and Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy, Devendra Banhart, Charlie Poole, Cannon's Jug Stompers
Favorite spot?
Edinburgh Scotland. Montpelier Vermont.
Equipment used:
A Bart Reiter banjo primarily with an assortment of other odd instruments. Did I mention my 1966 Telecaster?
