Sabrina Modelle has been performing on stage since the age of six. While still in anklets and Mary Janes, she was begging to sing the torch songs by legendary ladies like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington. At fifteen, well on her way to becoming an Opera singer, she heard someone singing “Good Morning Heartache” and her life changed in that single sparkling moment. She ditched opera at the age of eighteen and began studying with, the renowned, Raz Kennedy. She’s never looked back, she sings Jazz Standards, Blues, and Bossa Nova tunes in her trademark sexy and saucy way. Sabrina has sung for virtually every type of audience from Nancy Reagan and Kofi Annan to the bawdy crowd at San Francisco’s Eagle Tavern. Upon seeing her performance, it’s easy to see which audience this sultry yet sassy Diva likes best.
Why this name?
It's the name I was born with.
Do you play live?
I love playing live. As you can see, there are live MP3s available for download. Performing is like a drug, like sex, like love, like all the marvelous, comforting, terrifying, and exhillarating things I know rolled into one. One of my favourite moments on stage happened when my mind suddenly went blank, and during my signature song, Whatever Lola Wants. It was like the lyrics were momentarily erased from my brain. Ever on my feet, I acted quickly, pulling a gentleman from the audience onto the stage using his tie to guide him. Once I got him, I promptly pushed him to the ground, and put my foot on his chest until he was completely reclined. Then, AHA! "recline yourself, resign yourself you're through". That very embarrassed, but very happy man, saved my performance
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I'm so thrilled to know that people all over the world might hear my music. Although it may not be the type of International audience I dreamed of as a child, it is a pretty great one!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If Verve or Decca or any great Jazz label came calling, I would not b;link an eye before saying yes. I want to be a part of that rich rich history.
Your influences?
Ella, Billie, Dinah, Sarah, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Carmen McCrae, Blossom Dearie, The Incredible Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith.
Favorite spot?
San Francisco, CA.
Equipment used:
A mic and nothing else but what I got.
