The internet does help in that the big record companies no longer fully control access to music. The downside is that with everyone trying to get their music noticed, that it can be even more difficult to get exposure.

The jury is still out on that one. From what I understand, a record contract is really just a loan that must be paid back. It appears that the system is designed so that the artists usually get very little left over, if they don't get their legal end correct up front. A good agent or lawyer seems to be key.
