Hello! I'm Kenny Powell, and I'm a children's music artist from Sacramento, California. Now, before you decide to move on to something else, hear me out! "Preschool Jam!", my award-winning debut CD, is the funkiest kids' music you've ever heard! Imagine children's music influenced by artists like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, George Clinton, and Earth, Wind & Fire! No kidding! Think about it: kids love action movies, video games, and cartoons. Why not give them action music that's educational, fun, and gets them movin'? "Preschool Jam!" is the alternative to Barney, Raffi, Disney, and the Wiggles that kids and their parents have been waiting for. If you don't believe me, listen to "DINOSAURS!" and tell me what you think. "Preschool Jam!" is a 2006 Children's Music Web Award winner for Best Recording for Preschoolers ages 3 to 5.

Music for the upcoming CD, "Preschool Jam! 2 - Jam-Packed!", has already created serious buzz. What? Buzz? For kids' music?! Kenny was featured in the Sacramento Bee, a major newspaper (see his "Sunday Single" feature at SacBee Sunday Single - Kenny Powell and SacBee Sunday Single - Kenny Powell: full story
Not only am I a musician, but I'm also a 20-year veteran preschool teacher. Most kids' music artists have very limited real-world experience with young children, which is why they put out the same old sound. I know from experience what's appropriate for kids, and what they really want from their music. "Preschool Jam!" contains a variety of original, traditional, movement, learning, sing-a-long, resting, and just plain fun songs for kids, parents, teachers, and anyone who loves to groove! So free your mind of any preconceived notions about children's music, and check out my grooves!!!

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet makes it possible for artists like me to promote, market and sell our own music, and get the lion's share of the profits. If you use smart ways to keep costs down, you can make a nice profit by selling a fraction as much as if you were with a record label. You also have complete artistic control, plus you can sell physical CDs, digital downloads, or both.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes. It comes with its own set of complications, but doing it all yourself can be exhausting, especially if you're still on your day job full time.
Your influences?
My biggest influences are soul/R&B/funk artists from the 1970s, like the one I mentioned in my intro: Stevie Wonder, James Brown, George Clinton, Earth, Wind & Fire, and so many more.
Equipment used:
For the most part, I keep it simple and vintage. I use a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak keyboard (from the makers of the legendary Prophet 5), a Roland TR-505 drum machine, a Yamaha FB-01 sound module, a Peavey Spectrum Bass II module and a Peavey Spectrum Synth module. I used to record on a old Tascam 424 Portastudio 4-track cassette ministudio, but now I use a Tascam DP-01FX 8-track digital recorder. I'm also using a Roland VP-9000 sampler and a Roland SP-404 sampler, which have expanded my sound choices considerably. Lately, my secret weapons have been various guitar pedals. They work GREAT with my keyboard and modules, and even with the drum machine! I make WAV files on my computer with the Diamond Cut Audio DC6 program, and the db-audioware dB-L mastering limiter DX plugin.
Anything else...?
Even if you don't have young kids, or think you don't like children's music, give me the chance to change your mind!
