The 4th Normal Form Band is from the Indianapolis, IN area and consists of four boys (ages 18, 17, 15, and 13) and their father. They perform regularly at venues ranging from coffee shops and churches to college campuses, festivals, conferences centers, and county and state fairs. Their music is strictly family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.
The 4NF Band plays a variety of musical styles, including progressive, hard, and soft rock, as well as blues and new country. In the past, they have covered such bands as Kansas, Journey, Jimmy Buffett, Boston, Rush, John Denver, Creed, and Kenny Wayne Sheppard. Their music can be found on their five full-length CDs, Seeds of Time, Here in America..., Mothers of Invention, HumanNature, and Coram Deo. Various themes run through the band’s original works. Some of their material is philosophical in nature, while some is simply amusing—creative illustrations of contemporary life and thought.

Why this name?
Robert, the father in the band and a professor of Computer Science explains: In a computer science context (and more specifically in the area of relational database theory), 4th Normal Form means that we have a set of related database tables that exhibit the following characteristics: Each table 1) has a primary key that is defined and populated with unique values, 2) contains no partial dependencies (that is, no non-key attribute is functionally dependent on only a part of the primary key), 3) contains no transitive dependencies (that is, no non-key attribute is functionally dependent on another non-key attribute), and 4) contains no multiple sets of multi-valued attributes. Need I say more?
Do you play live?
Yes. Lots of places. See introduction above.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It permits many more people to distribute their music to the world. Thus, there is so much more music out there for folks to choose from. In the past, only those who the music industry deemed worthy (i.e., pretty/handsome) got their music heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably not. Just depends.
Band History:
The band began performing in public in January of 2002, after spontaneously forming in the Fall of 2001. They have performed regularly ever since. The 4NF Band has performed at venues ranging from coffee shops and churches to college campuses, festivals, conferences centers, and county and state fairs. The band has been seen by as many as 30,000 people at a single event (The Indianapolis Life 500 Mini Marathon). Because of the band’s unique make-up and musical talent, they are regularly invited to perform around Indiana and surrounding states. During the summer, the band performs virtually every weekend. During the school year, they perform about once or twice per month. They have played over 200 shows in 8 US states and Taiwan (Republic of China).
