Paper Cats is a lover's duo. We range through folk and anti-folk to rougher electrified rock and blues; Chris plays guitars--six string, twelve string, classical acoustic, electric, you name it--and Lauren mostly sings. Some of our work is Chris's solo guitar composition, some Lauren's solo ballads, but increasingly our work is collaborative, usually with Chris writing guitar parts and Lauren writing vocal parts. We are enjoying ourselves immensely.
Why this name?
Brainstorming. Plus, we love cats. And paper. It sounded better and more fitting than "Rum and Peaches" or "Viable Frog." ("Viable Frog" would, we feel certain, make an excellent band name.)
Do you play live?
Just at home with the doors open, or for friends. But we're wondering...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
We don't know.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
We don't know.
Band History:
Chris started playing guitar in high school, fell out of it, but was inspired to start again in earnest a couple years ago, when we fell in love. Lauren has been singing since birth, or maybe before, and recently decided to compose her own vocals.
Your influences?
The usual suspects: Dylan, CSN, Richie Havens, Neil Young, John Fahey, Nick Drake, Greg Brown, the Beatles, Mike Nesmith, Ani DiFranco, Carly Simon, anti-folk, folk, Irish ballads, X, REM, Simon and Garfunkel, etc., etc.
Favorite spot?
Just a little lower... a little lower... now over to the left... not quite that far... oooh, ahhhh, perfect! (Chris: Pittsburgh, PA Lauren: Long Beach, CA)
Equipment used:
Takamine 523SC 12-string, Cordoba C5-CE, through a cheapie but reliable M-Audio pre-amp, Ableton Live, run on a G4 iBook. Lauren's voice, through an MXL 990 vocal mic, into the same contraption. Our brains. The cat.
Anything else...?
Hope you enjoy our stuff. Feedback is appreciated, especially constructive feedback.
