Well, my name is Meliyah or Meli. I'm a nineteen year old female who has been writing since about fourth grade. I got serious about it around middle school and since have had a total of 11 published pieces and three awards. I use my writing as a form of release and a way to speak out against things that I believe should be heard.
Why this name?
My poetry is spoken, and coming from the soul. Hence, Spoken Soul.
Do you play live?
I have been involved in several SLAM contests and such. Nothing too serious though.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It allows people to get out there and be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Well, considering I only do spoken word type stuff, nah. A few years ago I used to do freestyling, but have since ceased that.
Your influences?
Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill, Fugees, Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Etc.
Favorite spot?
My home town of Brooklyn
Equipment used:
My mic. Haha.
Anything else...?
Erm. Nope.
