I studied classical composition at Carleton University. I then moved to Montreal to study jazz composition with Andrew Homzy and Joe Sullivan. I like to explore how different styles and sounds combine. I will then try to coerce them into a harmony yet try to maintain their individuality.
Why this name?
My mother chose this name.
Do you play live?
I have played live in Guelph with a band that was thrown together for a special event. However, I am searching for jazz musicians interested in exploring new sounds.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think the Internet will offer people more choice in the music they listen to. It will also allow non-mainstream artists to have a voice.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depends on the terms.
Band History:
I began playing guitar at the age of 9. It was the 70's and I wanted to be the next Jimmy Page. I then picked up a book on "Solo Guitar" thinking that I could learn to play like Eddie Van Halen. However, it was a book on classical guitar. I developed an interest in classical guitar. I also developed an interest in classical composition, especially 20th century composers. I desperately wanted to be a classical composer. When I entered University, I learned how limited an audience contemporary classical music had. It was at this time that I developed an interest in jazz. After moving to Montreal, I studied jazz composition and fell in love with the music. I continue to write to this day.
Your influences?
There are 2 styles of music that influence me - classical music & jazz. My influences in classical are: Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten and Bela Bartok. My influences in jazz are: Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington. I also like to listen to newer Canadian jazz talent, especially Michael Occhipinti.
Favorite spot?
I most like Montreal
Equipment used:
Fender Telecaster with a Traynor tube amplifier. No effects when playing live. However, there are effects on the sample tunes.
