GRIL stands for Germany (GR) and Israel (IL). That’s where we come from, or more precisely, where we now live. Our musical project started with the collaboration of Stefan, who is German, and Paul, who actually is English but moved to Israel. You may not hear it in our music, but that’s what makes GRIL-SONGS so special.

Our music has many roots and influences. But you may probably call it Indie or Americana, a blend of Blues, Folk, Gospel and you may even find some Latin music here, too. Let’s not forget that we were brought up with the music of the 60's and 70's. We try to transfer all these different strains into the 21st century. On this site you can read more about us and our view of the world.

But of course GRIL-SONGS is mostly about the music. On these pages you can listen to our songs and read the lyrics.
Why this name?
My songwriting partner lives in germany - GR and I live in Israel - IL - hence GR+IL = The Grils!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes
Band History:
GRILs music is born out of blood and guts and Christmas trees in the fire of summer days spent in sin (& sometimes in Spain, the deep South, Scarborough Fair and other such diverse places too. The seeds of our music float on the wind back through the decades, the 70’s, 60’s and back on through eons of time to where music began - hear the Tom-Tom’s beating, claps like thunder, foot stomping and cries from within - some joyful, some spat out in pain ..... ‘Nothing happens by chance, everything has its roots and everything is meant to be’ some so-called-wise-man once said - it’s the mathematics of the jungle that even Einstein can’t put in an ordered equation on a black-board. Like the universe our music is full of big bangs and structure and order that is constantly expanding and growing. It is about the fabric of life and the destruction of life, of love and mostly it’s about eroding and stripping away the “I’s” so that the fog that has fallen like a concrete curtain is lifted so that you are seeing with new eyes .... our music is about that .... and some more ....!

Your influences?
Dylan, The Band, The Jayhawks, The Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash ... and many more ....
Anything else...?
.... and so .... as we all played ‘ring-a-ring-a-roses’ the sun exploded - ‘musta burned itself out - happens to us all sooner or later’. ‘Now who will give us light”? cries Little Bo Peep (The baker man’s bread house is under curfew) ‘Who will put me together again”? grunts Humpty Dumpty, but from the shadows Mr. Houdini appears and just winks and whispers “All will be well”. Miss Peep is distraught and screams “I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I want it now and anyways what are exactly these songs supposed to be about”? - It’s obvious that she hasn’t dived in and swam amongst the rhythms and waves .... but I can’t tell you exactly what they’re ‘about’ but some are about three, some are four, and some are even about 5 minutes! .... Suddenly Peter Pan arrives on the scene with crocodile tears running down his cheeks moaning that he can’t get time’s ‘tick-tock’ noise outta his head and that he’s a nervous wreck and his hair’s turning white. “Take a spoonful of sugar” suggests Miss Poppins as Peter and his shadow stroll down the avenue with Gene singing and dancing in the rain that is a-washing the yellow dye offa the brick road. “It’s a hard rain” and “It’s a political world” says the jester as he single handedly blows up Tin-Pan-Alley. In his room the President is naked and on the wall Bambi’s been stuffed and mounted. “Force and power are the answer” screams Georgie Porgie till he turns red in the face & falls amongst the body bags on his neatly trimmed lawn as the eagles sing the anthem ‘Oh Land of Greed and Lust’. Father Christmas is doing time for liking little girls & boys far too much, in the street all the signs point the wrong way, Alice is day-tripping & Miss Muffet’s moved into porn, the air’s burning & the sea’s rising over King Canute & “What’s my philosophy” you ask? Well, “it’s ‘Do unto others” or sometimes it’s “Don’t do unto others” - depending on what it is they’re trying to do to you at the time & I’ve said all this whilst standing on one leg ......... This is just what some of these songs are ‘about’ - the rest you will just have to figure out for yourself in time .........!
