I've been singing, writing, and playing a long time. I've sung with different bands and groups, both Christian and secular. In wasn't until eight years ago that I started writing Christian music. It was during a time in my life that I experienced some very hard times, but had come through those times only because God was (and is) constant, merciful, and ever-faithful. He is so awesome and I wanted to write songs of praise and adoration for all He had done for me. I felt so undeserving, thus the song, Undeserved, the title track to my first CD, was born.
Do you play live?
I play live in local churches, community worship events, and various Christian music venues.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
There seems to be more access to different kinds of music. Instead of just listening to what seems popular at the moment, you can get online and search for obscure, unheard of bands that have an unusual sound that you might not have heard unless you just kind of stumbled onto it. It also has seemed to give people a voice or a way to share their music that they wouldn't normally have had a chance to have.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I don't know. I am happiest when I'm just writing songs to express gratitude or to praise God. I don't need all the "fluff" at this point in my life. The one advantage I can see by being able to share my music would be that you would get to spread His word and that's what He calls us to do.
Your influences?
I was in college when I saw Sandi Patti open for a famous Christian rock band. I was so blown away by her performance that I didn't really pay much attention to the other band. I'm also interested in new or emerging worship bands to see how Christian music has changed. Lately, I've been interested in BarlowGirl; she has interesting lyrics that give people a lot to think about.
Favorite spot?
I like traveling to different areas of the country, but there is still no place like home. Indianapolis is big enough to do some interesting things, but small enough to feel safe raising a family with Christian values.
Equipment used:
My favorite way of performing is just with my keyboard and a microphone; more of an intimate personal relationship with the audience or congregation. I like having more of a conversation with them in which we all worship God together through music.
Anything else...?
One of my favorite things to do is to get a bunch of musicians together, each with their own ideas and experiences and then combine all those gifts and talents to create music to worship God. For me, that is SO fun!
