Born in San Antonio, TX and raised in South Carolina, while only the youngest of three children, I started writing creatively as early as 6 years old and joined the choir at 5 singing my way through 10 years of church services enveloping me in a world of music and creativity. By high school I was singing on the school’s chorus, performing in local talent shows, and had already accumulated 6 years of poems and songs. After graduation I began attending the Univeristy of South Carolina @ Columbia but have always kept the vision of perusing a music career in full view.
Do you play live?
I have done a few live performances at talent shows and open mics in Columbia, SC.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
If it wasn't for sites like this, no one would have a clue who Stephaie Grissett is. For that, Sounclick will always have a place in my heart :)
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I either want to sign a recording deal, publishing deal, or both if possible.
Your influences?
Raised a preacher’s kid, I am more than familiar with gospel greats like Shirley Ceaser and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Listening to gospel music was number one growing up in the Grissett home, but my curiosity and love of music didn’t stop me from exploring the depths of other music genres. Before listening to R&B, Hip Hop, or even Rap music, Jazz and Classical along with Gospel became my music of choice. Having a combination of influences like CeCe Winans, Coltrane, and Beethoven may seem odd to some, but it was anything but that for me.
Favorite spot?
So far I would have to say that Manhattan, NY is a pretty live place to be. Although I don't think I would ever leave my Southern roots for a big city like that, it is a great place to visit for fun.
Equipment used:
When I record or perform, I usually just use recorded music, but I'm very interested in the idea of have a band. I just feel the live element of a band on stage would be able to create a deeper more soulful experience for me and the audience.
