“It is the year 2002. Humans have experienced many forms, many styles, many avenues of music… but it is now through this dawn of a new millennium that we experience the sound of j.h.i.m.i”
The opening track to the highly anticipated debut album. And what an experience indeed! Just when you think music has been exhausted to the point of monotony, jhimi, with his album titled, “I Am Your Man”, fuses R & B and Pop into an innovative and seductive formula.
Jhimi, pronounced \’jim-ee\, is as straightforward as his name. Living in Oak Park Sacramento, CA. and being raised in the church by a large extended family, made it possible for him to set his sights high. He had a great interest in singing, but was shy he recalls, “Most singers grew up in the church and sang in the choir. Although I had a family with a musical background. I felt intimidated by my cousin and aunts who could keep the congregation teary eyed with their voices. When I’d get the nerve up to sing, it would be as quiet as possible and from the pews” he laughs.
Despite his shyness to sing, he was not however scarred to perform. Inspired by Michael Jackson, jhimi, started performing at talent shows and at his uncles club, A Touch A’ Class, during elementary school. “I would study every move of Michael’s and had almost every outfit. I was amazed on how he could capture the audiences attention. I remember watching him on the Motown music awards. He had the crowd on their feet without back-up dancers, singers, or a band” he recalls.
It wasn’t until graduating from high school that jhimi decided to develop his vocal ability at the University of California at Berkeley. With a major in architecture, he began voice classes as electives. “I needed to start with a basic foundation to find out my potential”, he explains. After years of serenading his fellow students in the design studios, he was awarded the honor of class valedictorian upon graduation. “People in my class always told me I had a great voice so I decided to sing the first paragraph of my valedictorian speech. The audience was quite surprised to hear their class speaker singing as was I with their applause”.
A year later, jhimi’s confidence in his singing continued to grow during a fellowship at Harvard University. He jumped at every opportunity to sing in karaoke bars and night clubs. The most significant event for him to showcase his talent came during an informal competition during a Chante Moore concert. Singing to an audience of over 400 patrons, he beat out four other competitors and was invited to sing on stage with Ms. Moore. “After the concert, people were coming up to me asking where I was going to perform, what group I was in, and even if I had an album coming out soon”.
The album, jhimi, I Am Your Man, will make the audience reminisce and fantasize about the experiences brought forth in this compilation. Working with platinum producers D Man and Dereck ‘DOA’ Allen and Hip-Hop producer Khali Bless, the album moves you to dance and hits home with a variety of subjects. Writing on over half the album, he brings his own personal experiences to the project. “I wanted the album to be authentic and with subject I have first hand knowledge in”, he explains. Having opened for such artist as Eric Benet and Link, jhimi displays his presence as dancer, vocalist, and true entertainer during his live performances. From the bounce track “Don’t Tell” to the party groove of “Multiples”, the innovations in music and vocal arrangement showcases jhimi as an artist with unbridled talent.
The album also celebrates the beauty of making love and challenges those who believe relationships are something short and sweet. The seductive tracks of “Taste You, Freak On, and 7 Days” signify patience and attention to the details of intimacy that’s certain to affect every nuance of the five senses proving that jhimi… Is your Man.
