NEWS   1/22/06-Starting the page
2/23/06-The third song still has a couple weeks left on it. It's coming along nicely. More piano than in any of the other songs, also more metal than in any of the others as well. I need to change one part, and I'm trying to come up with an idea for a transition for these two parts. I'm debating if the other part I'm think of is even fitting for the song. I'm not really sure how I feel putting it in there. Which is ironic because it's the first piece of music I came up with for the song. I just, I'm not sure if it's going in.
3/1/06 - Look for the new song up either tomorrow or Saturday.
3/06/06 - I posted on here that the new song would be up by last Saturday at the latest. Well, that did not happen. I'm just working on fine tunage. But, there's a 98% chance it'll be up Tuesday.
3/07/06 - FINALLY got the new song up "In The Void". Also I changed "...And Then There Was One" to "The Resin". Hope you all enjoy the new stuff.
3/23/06 - So, song 4 is almost up. Currently titled "Nothing Was Alright", but will, as the others have been, changed. I merely need to lay down the guitar. But, first I gotta figure out the effect I'm going to use. I had an idea in my head, and I tried to put it down, and I couldn't get it to sound right. So, I have another idea as well and I'm going to see if I can get that one to work. If not, I'm gonna go back to the first idea and work with it until I get it. This song has been written with jamming in mind. It's a fun, energetic song. And the bass is just crazy awesome.
4/01/06 - New song up! "Nothing Was Alright" I've put alota work into this one definitely.
4/06/06 - I have another one ready to go. I know that I just put up "Nothing Was Alright" a couple days ago. So how do I already have another one? Well it's a redone version of an old song which I wrote before I decided to start writing more prog-ish stuff, called "Falling Apart" (that was the name of the old one). I added an intro to it and rearranged piano and some of the bass, and added effects to everything and it sounds super good. I really really wanted to redo it 'cause I absolutely love it and I didn't wanna throw it away. It's actually divided into two tracks "Falling" and "Down" (I strayed oh so far away from the original title didn't I?). "Falling" is the intro to "Down". It's different from any of the other The Trying stuff. This one is much more darker and slower. Like I said, I absolutely am in love with it and am extremely proud of it. I'll put up this weekend I suppose. I hope you all enjoy it.
4/17/06 - Got Fallen/Down up. Go check it out. Like I said before, it's not proggish like the other stuff. It's more dark. It's really good.
4/30/06 - I just purchased the recording unit I've been saving up for. As soon as the first song gets recorded (which will be Born In Winter), it goes online, and mad promo begins. But, I recorded the unit via internet so it'll take a few weeks until I get the song recorded.

Also, I'm looking for bandmates. Bass, vocals, keyboards, drums. If you're interested, lemme know.
5/17/06 - Almost. Born In Winter (the song) will be up soon. I would've had it up by now, but school's almost over, so that means final projects and whatnot. I'll be glad when school's out so I can work more on music.
I've put a lot of new stuff into Born In Winter. It has turned out absolutely phenomenal in my opinion. I can't even listen to the version on here because it sounds so naked compared to the new version.
It should be up by this week maybe. Keep checking.
5/29/06 - Born In Winter and The Resin are up. The songs have a different sound to them as additional parts were written. Plus, the sound quality is better as they have been mastered. I'm very very happy with the way these songs turned out. Hope you enjoy them.
6/9/06 - Posted a sampler of "In The Void", which will be the third track on the "Born In Winter" LP.
6/10/06 - Decided to put the full length version of In the Void up instead of the sampler.
6/14/06 - Born In Winter, The Resin, and the newest-In the Void, are all up. Working on the fourth song to be up, and those four songs will comprise the Born In Winter demo. I'm still figuring out exactly how distribution's going to work. But I'll figure it out. And of course, the demos will be free...which is why I have to figure out exactly how this is going to work while I work upon a tight budget. But it will. The next song should be up next week sometime.
6/19/06-I thought I was done with the demo. However, I just can't bare to release something that I don't feel is up to a certain level of musical quality. And I thought it was there. But, it's not. It's close. It's not major remodeling I have to do. It's more minor stuff that makes a big difference. But, I will have it done.

Also, when I get the demoes made, who would be interested in recieving a free copy? By leave-of-comment, lemme know.

And, a new song might be up. I'm contemplating if I wanna put all 4 demo songs online.
7/4/06-Demo is ready and will be released this Friday locally. As far as being accessible online, it should be relatively soon, I'll get back on that one.
Born In Winter demo - 4 Tracks
1)Born In Winter
2)The Resin
3)My Fallen Substitute
4)Into The Next Winter

And yeah, once I can get the demoes online, they'll be free. So, they'll kinda be limited because I don't have alot of money.
So, if you want one. Lemme know and it'll prolly be like a first come-first serve kinda thing.
7/18/06 - The entire Born In Winter demo is up for download here or on my MySpace . All I ask in return is that you please sign up for the mailing list here on this page.
9/05/06 - Since the release of the Born In Winter demo I've edited some of those songs and got some rough drafts down for news songs, but that's about it as far as musical construction.
I've been in a musical rut for the past few weeks. But in the meantime I've been collecting ideas and getting new visions for my music. And if all goes as planned, I will be putting out some of the most impressive stuff you've ever heard from a local band. haha I know that's a conceited statement, but that's just how I feel about my visions right now.
The four songs from the demo you will see pop up again in the future, but sounding different and with different names.
I'm not sure when any new material is going to surface. It could be awhile because I'm not sure how long writing's going to take.
A band. That is something I hope to achieve, it's part of my "vision". In fact, without a singer, that vision's going nowhere. I am not going to start worrying band formation too seriously at the time. However, if you'd be interested drop me a line and we can talk and just get to know each other.
Musicians I'm looking for: (also, I dunno if my band-vision will alter any, so maybe things may change, dunno.) But for right now the band formation will be:
Drummer
Bassist
Female Singer/Keyboardist (both)
and obviously I'd be on guitar.
Again, for right now I'm more worried on writing but the band thing will come down along the line, and if anyone's interested, just talk.
9/23/06 - 9/23/06 - New song, kinda... I posted a short clip of a new song I'm working on. It's still rough draft and there's no bass or guitar in this song yet. But it still has a solid foundation. Check it out and lemme know what you think.
10/07/06 - I have just recently finished the rough draft for the first song on "Realize, Accommodate" which is the title of the EP I am working on. I have posted that song, "Nothing But Decay" on MySpace here..

Unlike the Born In Winter demo, the lyrics to these songs are a huge importance. The theme of the album is all about realizing things in your life that contradict your beliefs, and changing your beliefs around to accommodate for the new information. Too often we find information that contradicts what we believe, so we ignore it like it doesn't exist. This keeps people separated. Humanity's goal should be to unify, and if we continue to ignore the world other people face and stay within the confines of our own world, we will surely stay divided.

Before the release of this EP I want a live band! I need a drummer and a female vocalist/pianist. Also, I've spent so much money on instruments, accessories, and recording gear, and being a solo musician, it's killed me. I don't really have any sound equipment. So, I'm not going to lie, if you have some good sound equipment for playing live, I'm probably going to be a tad bit more biased to you.
But as stated before, lyrics to the EP should be detrimental. I need a vocalist. And I want a female vocalist who can also play piano while she's singing.
But most important, you ("you" pertaining to either a drummer or singer who's interested) must want to be a part of this music. Not because you just want in a band. I want people who I will become friends with, not just a fellow musician. And I want people who stand by what The Trying stands for, which is: love; intelligence; realizing the trivial things in society which bind us but have no importance as far as moral goes; fun; caring; communication; progressive mindedness; being able to admit you're wrong; maturity; and trying to become a better person.

There are also two new songs, along with NBD, posted on the soundclick site:

1.) Changing Colors - This is the only new song, besides Nothing But Decay, written since the release of the Born In Winter demo. This song will not be featured on any releases because it's quite sub-par, but I'm posting it anyway because I spent time (too much) on it. Actually, I spent longer learning the guitar part in this song longer than I've ever spent learning a guitar part. The key word there being "learning", not "writing". Because I had written the piano and the guitar just followed, and the piano was really complex. So yeah, it's not actually very good, but it's up there.

2.) Born In Winter (extended version) - This is worth checking out if you like Born In Winter. This is an extended version of the song and the new part to it is very very cool, in my opinion. Also, some of the music's been slightly altered to make it better. When a live band is formed, this will most likely be the version of Born In Winter played, so check it out.

Remember, Nothing But Decay is written with having a vocalist in mind. So there's a couple times (short times) where you may start to feel bored, this is why. I still want to try music that can hold itself up with vocals, and I feel I am still doing that. However, it does mean that a couple parts may start to get boring, however, just start. I will never have something that continues to be boring without vocals.

I hope all of you like the new song, and will like the new material. And I hope that if you live around here (Goshen/Milford/Loveland/Blanchester/Cincinnati) you take an interest in the music and become interested in forming a live band.
11/25/06 - Alright, if you've followed my ambitions, I've wanted a live band. I decided I don't want that. I want to be able to work with a wide variety of musicians. So, the idea of collaberations has solidified within my mind.
I've already contacted a couple people on stuff, and I have people in mind for other things that I have not contacted as of yet. When the time is right. But, I'm really really excited for this.
Not much text, but important.

Chris

The Trying. A name representing something we must constantly be doing in our lives. We must always try to overcome our problems. We must always try to take the negative and turn it into a positive. We must try to always get the lessons from the trials we are given. And we must always try to become better people.

Learning to accommodate for that which may contradict our schema is how we all will unify. Anything else is ignorant.

The current project is the just-starting EP that will be entitled “Realize, Accommodate”. Unlike the Born In Winter demo, the lyrics to these songs are a huge importance. The theme of the album is all about realizing things in your life that contradict your beliefs, and changing your beliefs around to accommodate for the new information. Too often we find information that contradicts what we believe, so we ignore it like it doesn’t exist. This keeps people separated. Humanity’s goal should be to unify, and if we continue to ignore the world other people face and stay within the confines of our own world, we will surely stay divided.

The Trying is a project I started. I wanted to accomplish two main things - 1.) Write something fresh and original and, more importantly, 2.) Write from the heart. I love music and I don't really care for guidelines. I think it shows in my music as you'll hear influences of metal, electronica, funk, classical, and more. Another thing I wanted to do was combine my love for electronic music and improv music. I think that's something that people don't really hear being combined. The Trying is a one man project. Everything is written and recorded by me, Chris Kaetzel. I love music and I believe you can hear that when you listen to the songs I write.

Why this name?

Do you play live?
Still just me.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It makes music so much more accessible. It's a blessing.

Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would. Just depends on the terms. Always accepting of advice but never of compromise (when it comes to music).
