J Johnson is a dedicated man of GOD and a new, exciting, Holy Ghost filled gospel artist from Harrisburg, PA. J Johnson is the lead singer of his musical entourage, "The J Johnson Project." The J Johnson Project consists of 7 members with J Johnson on lead vocals, 2 additional vocalists Tabitha Gatling and Shantrice McNeely, keyboardist, Mr. Thaddeus Gatling, Ben Pearson on bass, LauVarre Williams on the drums, and Quentin Gatling as the band's sound technician. J Johnson brings a fresh new sound of gospel music that intertwines a tasteful blend of neo-soul, R&B, and hip-hop for your listening pleasure, that is being welcomed by many people abroad. Sit back, relax, be blessed, and enjoy; Your access is now granted to the wonderful world of "J Johnson"!
Why this name?
The name “J Johnson” is an abbreviation of my birth name. After looking for an appropriate name, “J Johnson” became my stage name. The “Project” was unique in its own right, and speaks the sentiments of our purpose. We are a project in the making, made up of many parts that have come together in order to create one whole entity. We are focused on one purpose, and that is to show Christ for who He is, “A lover of our souls, who delights Himself in our sincere praises, whereby WE, together, can reach the masses of lost souls crying in the wilderness of life.
Do you play live?
Yes, I do perform live with my band. I’ve performed in various capacities such as at various church services both solo with my keyboardist, and with my full band, as well at outdoor street ministry functions with the band, etc. I enjoy playing live. It sends a rush through me that ignites my compassion for the music I sing, and for the souls I anticipate reaching. My special moment was my first official concert where the vision of J Johnson and The J Johnson Project came into reality, and my family, both natural and spiritual, as well as friends and many other well-wishers all gathered to give me support.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I believe the Internet has a positive effect on the music industry. It allows local or unsigned artist(s) the greatest opportunity to have their music heard on a national/worldwide platform. Overall, it's convenient for all artist because it allows listeners to simply type your name into a search engine and with a few clicks, they can get access to your music via your website or sites such as SOUNDCLICK. In contrast, years ago, many listeners would not have had the opportunity to find new artist(s)and new music unless they were signed to a national recording label.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If the proper opportunity were presented to help advance our ministry we’d consider the relationship with a larger affiliate to expand our reach. I believe it would be dishonest of me to say that I’m satisfied with just this level in GOD, because I serve a GOD that said He would give me exceedingly, abundantly, above anything that I could ever ask or think, AND also that HE would supply my EVERY need, according to HIS riches in glory. I don’t know about you, but MY GOD is rich, HE’S MY FATHER, and HE specializes in things that SEEM impossible, for NOTHING is impossible with HIM. Therefore, I’m expecting and believing that my aspirations and ultimate dream(s) of taking my ministry worldwide are imminent.

My musical influences are the Clark Sisters, Kim Burrell, Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Smokie Norful, Hezekiah Walker, and Tye Tribbett just to name a few...
