Who is BOS?
Conrad sings lead vocals, Andy plays rhythm guitar and yells and Tim plays a bad ass lead guitar and sings. Why do they love rock n roll so much? Rock and roll saved their lives!
Why this name?
When we were little kids we were the Three Musketeers, then we were the CHELSEA STREET BEGGARS, then THE GEMS, then THE MODERN AGE, then we were SUNDAY SUIT, then DNA, MIAMI NOISE MACHINE, FORM A RING, THREE BLIND MICE and now BOX OF STUFF.
Why BOX OF STUFF? BOX OF STUFF says it all, doesn't it? Our music and our personalities are a box of stuff, a mix of a million influences and vibes. It makes perfect sense...to us anyway. Also, don't forget our favorite part of the female anatomy.
Do you play live?
We love playing live in Los Angeles, China, Florida, Chicago, Orange County, Santa Barbara, Calabasas, Irvine, Hollywood, the world and elsewhere. Rock and roll is about connecting with an audience in a spontaneous moment. We live to play live! We've been playing live (as pros) since we were 17. We mainly play clubs in LA, in and around the Sunset Strip and Hollywood - it's still the greatest area to play in the country (and we've played the East coast, the China coast and the Southern coast so we know of what we speak.
The greatest thing about playing live is the electricity that is generated between the band and the audience. The feeling it gives the performer, is indescribable. It's the greatest high you can have, way better than drugs and even better than sex. One of our favorite moments was a show in Florida when a slightly overweight female fan (drunk) took off all her clothes and climbed on the stage. It was a...somewhat inspiring and nauseating experience (all at the same time). Extremely memorable indeed.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet could have been the most exciting change in the music business in the last 30 years, but it's hard to tell if it's hype or reality. It could be as important to the sales/marketing side of the music biz as The Beatles were to the music side, but again, the public has to accept it as a place to buy music. It is changing the power structure of the music industry. People can now decide which bands they want to hear and buy without the labels controlling which bands get heard. Instead of record labels being gatekeepers they're becoming ineffectual bystanders (We love that!) MP3s and websites are the radio stations of the modern age.

The problem is that people still perceive the internet as a trading station to get free stuff. We're guilty of that too. New technology will come along - it already has - to stop the piracy that is going on on the internet. Deep down I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Whether the internet is good or bad for the music industry doesn't really matter any more becuz the genie is out of the bottle and she ain't going back in.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
We would sign to a major label if we felt they could meet our needs. We love to play and have people hear our music. We like making money, but we're not about being rock stars or just making dollars. We have enough money, but we never have enough people listening to our music. Record labels have a history of stepping in and "fixing" a band, but really end up messing up the coolest things about the band. Who needs that? We want more people to hear us and not be stifled by an image campaign or a change in the management of a label that signed us. We have lots of friends at labels and they tell us to stay away and create our own distribution, marketing and vision. That seems like a good idea to us.

If a band is good enough it seems that people have ways of finding them. Somehow good music gets itself heard.
Band History:
The band history for BOX OF STUFF is short. We've been together since 1999. Conrad and Andy have been together for several years playing clubs and writing songs.

They met in Tallahassee, Florida while going to college. This is the same town where Creed got their start. In fact, an old friend of Box of Stuff is John Kurzweg, producer for Creed and Puddle of Mudd.

Tim joined in LA and BOX OF STUFF was built. We got a production deal with BMG under a different name and toured China under another name with new members. After the China fiasco, we got back together in LA and started rehearsing. We recorded our debut CD which is now avail at www.CDbaby.com/boxofstuff right now.
We're gigging around LA, planning a national tour and selling CDs to pay for our monthly mini-bike payments.
By the way - how many times do I have to say it...buy the CD, now!!
Your influences?
We have the usual influences like the Beatles and The Who and the Rolling Stones, Led Zep etc. what rock band can say they aren't influenced by these gods. The Ramones and the Sex Pistols are big influences because they were kept out of the musical mainstream, but they thrived anyway.
Film makers like Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Sam Peckinpah, Martin Scorcese and Francis Coppola have a rock and roll attitude about making films which we draw inspiration from - not to mention song titles and ideas for lyrics.
Writers like Anthony Burgess, Arthur Miller, Mark Twain and Ray Bradbury let you see things with their words.

We like hearing and buying unsigned, independent bands and we support them as much as we can. Some of our favorites are the SLUTBOYS, The Know it Alls, Brilliant Sins and Pillow of Wrongness. Musically BOX OF STUFF sounds like a cross between Soundgarden, The Cult, The Tubes, Aerosmith and The Police. We used to play a lot of Elvis Costello, REM, Cheap Trick, Adam Ant, XTC, Clash, U2 and other punk/alternative bands in clubs.
Our songwriting gives us a chance to express a unique vision. We strive to reach the heights of writers like David Bowie, Jagger/Richards, Lennon/McCartney, Townsend. Obviously these names are icons to us and we don't say we're anywhere near their level, but we aspire to be as good as them.

Because of Conrad's vocal range (4 octaves baby), we write songs across the spectrum of vocal notes. That is a tremendous strength becuz so many bands are limited by their singer's puny pipes.
Favorite spot?
San Francisco is the coolest placest on the West Coast. NYC is the top of the heap for the East no matter how outsiders try to damage it. Since we're from Florida (some of us) we love South Beach and Daytona and the Florida Keys rock! If we tour this year, our first stop will be London because they still love new music more than any other city in the world. We love LA, but since we live here we have to take it for granted.
Cleveland is a great rock city and Chicago has tremendous soul. I guess i could list all 50 states. Americans invented rock and roll and it's the greatest contribution to civilization since sex. Rock and roll is freedom.
Equipment used:
We love loud, chunky amps like Mesa Boogie and Marshall. Yamaha also makes a cool amp with killer distortion. We've looked into the new digital pod amps like LINE 6 and Rocktron and we're still waiting for a really good one to be made. Our guitars are Fender strats, Ibanez Night Hawk, Gibson Les Paul, Hamer, Fender Bass, Gretch Drums and the DM5 drum module. We've owned huge PA systems and lighting shows so we know what's what when it comes to rock and roll gear. The latest digital effects for vocals and guitars are great to enhance the creative process. New technology is exciting, but it doesn't replace good songs. Try everything, settle for the best.
We have pro tools and we have the ability to do a lot of programming for live shows, but why bother? Rock and roll is about taking a chance on that stage that something will go terribly wrong. Don't you love when it does?
Anything else...?
We're really excited about the release of our debut CD called IT'S NOT HOLLYWOOD. We hope websites like Soundclick and MP3.com will help us to overcome our lack of mainstream distribution to sell millions of them. We want to give our audience their money's worth and we think we do.
In 50 years they'll look back at this time in music history as a golden age - a transition between broadcasting and narrowcasting. We love the fact that people all over the world are hearing our music and digging it on a one to one basis. For an artist/musician that is a bigger thrill than any royalty check! Live long, prosper, have good sex, eat good food, listen to and make good music, peace out!
