Indiens is a hip hop duo formed in 2005 by brothers Hatuey and Jeremie Laraque-Two Elk a.k.a. Arohed and Jerm. They were born to Native American (Lakota) and Haitian parents and spent their early lives between Colorado and NYC. Their first experiences with music came early in life through involvement with 'Goin’ On Young Indian Producers', a program that introduced Native American youth to radio production. Culminating with their radio and engineering experiences was their exposure to a wide variety of Native American music that would later influence their approach as musicians. They both began writing lyrics during their early teens, but it wasn't until much later that Arohed and Jerm decided to combine their talents and create the group Indiens. The name Indiens was chosen as a reference to their American Indian heritage, the spelling a play on their Caribbean (West Indies) background. During the course of releasing their first album 'Maroon' and performing at venues in Denver, CO and Rapid City, SD they established themselves as rap artists. Through independent market-specific promotion they gained attention and fans. Their songs received radio play throughout the U.S. and Canada, primarily from Native American DJ’s and radio stations in various cities and reservations. They originally gained popularity by offering hip hop music with themes related to their Native heritage. Eventually their music evolved to include broader subject matter but they still unquestionably stick to their roots. They have always made it a point to focus on their perspective as Natives, but their music has an increasing appeal to many other hip hop fans. They most recently released the digital-only, self-titled "Indiens the EP" available through their website www.IndiensHustle.com and are now working on their next full length album set to be completed in mid-2011.

Why this name?
The name 'Indiens' comes from who we are, Native American,Lakota, and Haitian. We took the word 'indians' and mixed it with West 'Indies' to come up with Indiens.
Do you play live?
Years ago we performed in Rapid City SD at the Black Hills Pow Wow. In Denver we played at the 2006 Auraria Campus Fall Fest, Bushwackers, Cervantes Ballroom and Herman's Hideaway. Aurora CO: Aurora Black Arts Festival. and Commerce City CO at the VFW.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Internet and MP3 opens doors for anyone who wants exposure to their music. There's a marketplace for the any artist to take advantage of.
Band History:
Indiens is two lyricists and one singer/lyricist that do Native Hop music. Thats hip hop by Native Americans that speaks on life from a Native perspective. Most people's perception of Native Americans today is bows and arrows and riding horses. In an attempt to convey the life and times of the Indian man(and woman) in the double O7 Indiens refuse to be held back by mere stereotypes and expectations while delivering a new style and sound. Hold on, Indiens are bringing it in.
Your influences?
Native ones being Without Rezervations, Buddy Red Bow, Willie Dunn, David Campbell, Robbie Robertson, and Clandestine, to name a few. It may not show in our sound but all of these groups have influenced our musical sense.
Favorite spot?
Denver, Colorado
