Cassini's Division
NEWS
New Year Greetings from Cassini's Division.
It's been quite an interesting month for the band. For a change, we are once again practising fresh original material at our rehearsals and the songs seem to be shaping up nicely.
Cassini's Division had an excellent show at Turquoise Cottage, Delhi. This being our first gig in the capital, we were both excited and a bit awed. The show, organised by Parikrama Inc, was held on December 19 and featured electric sets by three bands and an acoustic set by veteran rockers Parikrama. The gig was meant to be a reunion of sorts for bands that had played at the Dhanaulti Festival in November.
Advaita kicked off the show in style playing a tight set of fusion music before Parikrama's acoustic incarnation took the stage to regale the 300 strong crowd with some classic covers. Menwhopause, an excellent band from Delhi rocked the house with a set of impressive originals. Vocalist Sarab deserves special mention for being a fine musician with dollops of charisma. We played the final set well past midnight and played one of our strongest stage shows till date. We were called back for an encore and many in the audience claimed that we had blown them away. On returning home we recieved a deluge of congratulatory messages from Delhi. We are happy to have made a positive impression on our first gig in the city.
On the other hand, an RSJ correspondent has claimed in the latest issue of the magazine that our Chennai show in August didn't make much of an impression on the crowd. As it happens, we remember almost half the members of the audience, a number of musicians, and almost all the organisers taking the trouble to us to tell us what a fresh and new sound we have and how much they liked our near-all-original set. We're guessing that the RSJ correspondent (who didn't even come for the show) must have spoken to a different bunch of people. Also it seems (and this is truly hilarious - especially when you read it in print) that the crowd prefers bands that play Iron Maiden covers! :-o
So much for evolution of rock music in India. This further convinces us that we all need to get as far away from this classic rock/metal rules mentality as possible for the general good health and growth of music in 2006. Tell us what you think.
Hope to have more to tell you next month. For now its time to just chill.
Cheers and keep rocking in the new year.

Cassini's Division got together in the summer of 2001 to make their own brand of modern rock music. A lot of water has, since, flowed under the bridge.
In the last few years that they have been together, the members of the band have written a lot of original material that melds the influences of each member. The result is a throbbing mix of alternative and mainstream rock.
Cassini's Division's focus is on writing catchy, accessible song-based original music. The music is informed by a variety of influences but the attempt is to meld it into something unique.
As yet unsigned, Cassini's Division continues to explore avenues to take the music to as many people as possible out there.

Why this name?
A friend of ours suggested the name. Cassini’s Division is resonant with meaning and we thought it had a certain ring to it. (See http://www.cassinisdivision.com/trivia.html)
Do you play live?
The band plays weekends at the pub Someplace Else (The Park - Calcutta). They have also played festivals in Delhi, Chennai, Darjeeling, and numerous others. (See http://www.cassinisdivision.com)
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
How, do you think, did air travel change the tourism industry.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Obviously. Four people do not have the wherewithal to take their music out to the world. Recording apart, effective media, marketing and distribution promotion channels are totally indispensable.
Your influences?
From punk to grunge and rap/hip-hop to rock, there are many colours to the bands sound. The Cure, Radiohead, Duran Duran, and Muse are some of our faves.
