I play mostly period Celtic/folk/hillbilly music using Claw hammer banjo, guitar, banjo, Irish Bouzouki, and tin whistle, I also love old time gospel songs
Why this name?
Jeff Sturgill is my given & Christian name, Charcloth is a nick name I picked up at a living history event. It refers to a material used to make fire using flint & steel. I earned by using a faulty kerosene heater while camping. We all woke up (thank God) but were soot covered for sure! We all even had Hitler looking soot mustaches.
Do you play live?
on occasion, mostly for history events & Nursing homes. I prefer to play just for my own enjoyment & for my home church
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Like the Auto mobile to the horse & buggy or the cell phone to the pay phone. I guess it depends if you’re Amish or a NASCAR racer
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I seriously doubt the possibility.
Your influences?
The Corries, the Kingston Trio, John Denver, the Clancy brothers, Burl Ives, Lester Flat & Earl Scruggs, Glen Campbell, my mom & home church when I was a kid, even the Doobie Brothers & Bach. Also my Grandfather who often would sing silly songs & sea shanties (he taught me “Blow the Man Down”)
Favorite spot?
Any where my wife is at
Equipment used:
Guild JF 30 guitar, Chanterelle banjo, Saga SS 10 banjo, Trinity College Irish Bouzouki, 2 Shaw D & C penny whistles.
Anything else...?
Singing is good for the soul & the heart. It often makes a fitting prayer.
