deptiva didn't really start anywhere, it merely came to fruition from various sleazy encounters that I was enjoying with machines in the night.
Why this name?
It involved me mishearing something a friend said & then realizing my mistake. I thought it sounded pretty sexy though, & so I adopted it.
Do you play live?
No, not as deptiva nor any of my other current projects. I've had many invites and opportunities, but I don't feel that what I'm currently doing would be an interesting enough live set to work.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it's a fantastic resource for smaller, more "grassroots" labels, artists, promoters etc, & I like to have faith in music lovers, believing that if they download something that they like they will try to support the artists by buying the music & attending shows etc. (although far too many don't, but hey). I couldn't give a rat's ass about the majors though, although it is pretty sad to hear of bands getting dropped left, right & centre. But hey, there are other ways to get your music out there...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Hahahaha! No, I honestly wouldn't.
Your influences?
I can't pinpoint all of my influences (thank god), but seriously, who can? Music that particularly inspires me includes industrial ambient/death industrial, electro (in many of it's forms), early EBM & new beat, percussive & tribal techno, early industrial & noise, & so much more besides. The sounds of the city also influence me a great deal, from the low rumble of traffic to the rhythm of a tube train to the sounds of buildings sites, industry & beyond. Other things that play an obvious part include f***ing, losing control, suffocation (literally or otherwise), BDSM, heavy machinery, droning ambience, synaethesia, hedonism, obsession & the pleasure that I sometimes derive from fear. Certain films inspire, certain writers & philosophers inspire, but there really is no articulate way for me to answer this question.
Favorite spot?
Berlin. I have no idea why I moved back to London.
Equipment used:
ProTools 7 LE, Ableton Live 6, Reason 4.0, SoundForge 8.0, Roland JP8000 synth, MicroKorg synth, M-Audio Oxygen controller, Behringer BCR2000 controller, Edirol UA25 interface, SE Electronics 2000A condenser mic, Shure Beta 58A dynamic mic, Yamaha MSP3 monitors. For sound recordings I use an Edirol R-09 along with whatever I can get my hands on.
Anything else...?
Sound is everywhere, always. The only time we may experience true silence is in death, so we should celebrate the sounds around us & appreciate their beauty.
