Eight and One Half
NEWS
Listen to David Floodstrand's remix of Dodger by Eight and One Half. This mix includes live Cajonper, a native percussion instrument from Peru, mixed with the original instrumentation. The Dodger (Cajonper Mix) was remixed in Ableton Live.
Eight and One Half (8 1/2) is David Floodstrand, R. Lewis Floodstrand, and James Hopkins. David and Lewis have been a song writing team for over 20 years with over six hundred songs to thier credit. Together the brothers handle writing arranging and producing, as well as all instruments on their recordings.
Eight and One Half has toured extenstively throughout the mid-west as headliners with sold out shows in Chicago, Detriot, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. They have also toured with New Order, Killing Joke, The Thompson Twins, and Lene Lovich, just to name a few. Perhaps their most memorable show was opening for Roxy Music at the UIC Pavillion in front of a sold out house of over 10,000 in thier home town of Chicago.
Eight and One Half was managed for a number of years by The Firm's Peter Katsis, who presently manages Korn, and Limp Bizkit and began his career managing Ministry.
Al Jourgensen of Ministry produced a number of tracks for 8 1/2 at Chicago Recording Company in Chicago. I still have these tracks and they are due to be released in the near future. I have samples on our MP3 Music page.
8 1/2 garnered national radio airplay, on college radio, as well as power radio stations, and DJ pools with thier debut E.P. on Criterion Records.
Eight and One Half/Criterion International, has been mentioned or interviewed in the following publications; Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, Chicago Reader, Illinois Entertainer, Option Magazine, Matter Magazine, Alternative Press, Dance Culture, Rockpool, Trouser Press, Downbeat, Jazzis Magazine, Billboard.
After the formation of their record label Criterion Records (now Criterion International), and publishing company Kitty Dog Music BMI, the brothers have continued to produce music for other artists including the Chicago house music group Barnhouse, alternative rockers Deep Blue Dream, and jazz trumpet player Rex Richardson.
Presently David and R.Lewis continue to work on solo projects, remixes, producing other artists, voiceovers, and commercials.
David is also a nationally recognized club DJ, his top # 10 have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Rockpool, and DJ Times magazine. He began his DJ career in 1981, and over a period of approx 15 years (1981-1995) spun vinyl, or had residencies at the following Chicago clubs: Shelter, China Club, Esoteria, Outakes, Octagon, LimeLight, Metro, Neo, Exit, Avalon, The Bridge, Berlin, Union, Club 950 / Lucky Number, The Riviera, and The Park West. David has shared booth space with the finest of Chicago DJs including Mark Farina, and Johnny Fiasco. David, born in Anchorage, Alaska, presently works full time as club DJ in Orlando, Florida., and is putting his next touring band together.

Why this name?
The band was named after a Fellini film from the 1960's called 8 1/2. The film 8 1/2 by Fredrico Fellini was about a director in conflict with his art.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
So much more freedom for artists to interact, and fans to discover new or emerging music styles.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If we retained some control over how the band was marketed, and guaranteed tour support, we would definately consider it.
Your influences?
Nu Jazz, Downtempo, Acid Jazz, Jazzanova, Bugz in the Attic, Portishead, Peter Katsis, Floodstrand, 8 1/2, Sinatra, Portishead, Rex Richardson, Kurt Elling, Chicago Industrial, Chicago Jazz, Wax Trax, New Order, Eight and One Half, Vocalese.
Equipment used:
Ableton Live, Propellerheads Reason, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Cubase, Mackie Universal Control, and various keyboards and outboard gear that are constantly changing.

Music
This is an interesting mix of live drums (Cajonper), electronic drums and keyboards (Propellerheads Reason), and vocals sampled from vinyl, all re-mixed in Ableton Live. It's a bit long, but forgive me I was having fun.
This is just a preview of the final track.
Deep, dark, mideastern groove thang.
Dark and bluesy, with a thead of hope..
dark and etherial
Early Chicago Industrial music (1988), this track also features pre-Static-X frontman Wayne Wells, of Deep Blue Dream on backing vocals. This record charted well into the early 90's.
Airy and melodic.
sexy, loungy, and electronic. Martini music for the new millenium.
Dark and reflective.
Ambient with classical undertones.
Cool vibe acid jazz, with a bossa-nuevo flavour.
Nu Jazz vocals, with a deep funky groove.
Nu Jazz - with an early Chicago House feel.
Downtempo, late night groove.
From the album entitled 'The Jourgensen Sessions', by the band Eight and One Half. This Ministry side project has not been previously released, it was recorded in 1983 and has been in a vault for over 20 years.
Early Eight and One Half, produced by Al Jourgensen of Ministry in 1983. 2-min sample only.
