Why this name?
We had a huge antique chalkboard in the apartment where a couple of us lived. Over the span of a couple of weeks, we managed to completely fill it with possible band names. Over dinner one night, we decided........."snack!". The exclamation mark adds a feeling of urgency, vigor and excitement.
Do you play live?
We play live in various forms, various venues and various hats
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
For musicians who want their music heard, it's wonderful.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depending on the terms................Yes
Band History:
Once upon a time there was a funky little duo named “snack!” who were brought together by their love of tasty little treats, video game theme songs and shaking their flowing locks while playing rock music. They raised quite a stir playing their unique brand of “nibblecore”. People often commented on the experience by screaming, “Aural splendor” – Culture focus and “Thought provoking” – Guelph Mercury. Sometimes even “Songs that make the listener think”- Chart, would echo above the sound of cupcakes being devoured. After a while, the two snack!sters began a search for the perfect two friends to share in their indulgences. Criteria were quite strict, as the new members could not be imposters just looking for a free Twinkie or two. Along came Arun Pal, a fiery snack!er capable of consuming massive amounts of delectable grub – while also playing drums. This was indeed a perfect match. After a considerable wait, the scrumptious snack!ies met Chris Mulligan, the local “Mully”, who quite often indulged in treats of the snack!ish kind. A bassist/guitarist/songwriter extraordinaire, Chris would have no problems laying the groove and bringing his brand of aural treats to the group. Now, with the new members added, snack! could truly say that they are
“New and improved with double the taste and double the calories”.
Adrian Jones is a classically trained vocalist and guitarist who teaches 50 students each week in both disciplines. Between writing, teaching, performing with Regimbal in the duo “Adrian & Kim” and with snack!, Adrian stays quite busy making music that people can eat. Recently, Adrian and long time snack!ing partner Kim Regimbal released an acoustic CD entitled, “Al dente non presto”. His yummy of choice is “chocolate icing with a bit of cake” cake.
Arun Pal is a multi-instrumentalist teacher, performer, composer and recording engineer who accompanies many modern dance companies on drums, piano and guitar. His unique approach to percussion incorporates world percussion styles into a traditional drum kit setting. Arun’s 2nd solo CD is scheduled for release in Spring 2001. A Wilfrid Laurier Music graduate, Arun plays music full time in acoustic and band settings while eating kulfi with peppermint tea.
Kim Regimbal is a fiery performer whose playing ranges from ambient flute lines, to punchy baritone sax grooves, to aggressive dissonant alto sax solos. Exciting to watch, Kim often jumps between different instruments many times within each song. In snack!, he is known to play guitar and background voice at times. Kim also graduated from Wilfrid Laurier’s Music program in 1996, and Western’s Faculty of Education in 1998, and now teaches music at a local high school. He enjoys eating chocolate cake with cream cheese icing.
Chris Mulligan, the youngest snack!er, known locally for his ability as a guitarist/songwriter and hand-percussionist, fills the “void” with a flavor of bottom yet unknown. Chris’ debut solo recording will be released in the spring of 2001. A Laurier grad as well, this time in Geography, Chris can be found teaching or performing, a plate of smoked salmon with a side of crispy dills close at hand.
snack! have played on bills with a wide variety of performers including Rheostatics, Skydiggers, King Cobb Steelie, jacksoul, Andrew Cash, Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Fred Eaglesmith, David Wilcox, Rik Emmett, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, Fat Cats, One Step Beyond and Ron Sexsmith . Their music could best be described as Modern Rock with elements of Jazz, Funk, World and Folk. Their live performances focus on exploring and expanding on the boundaries of these genres within each song’s structure. This attention to their live shows earned them the runner-up position in the Kitchener Waterloo Record’s reader’s choice award for band of the year.
