The "band" consists primarily of me and my wife, Laura Decher. Laura does much of the singing, though I occasionally give it a try myself. Laura is an opera singer (soprano), in case you're curious about her unusual style. Except for one cameo by a drummer, I play all the instruments (including drum programming). My main instrument is keyboard, but I enjoy pretending to be a guitarist and bass player as well. I play all guitar and bass parts on actual guitars and basses (imagine that . . .). Oh, and I write all the songs and lyrics.
Why this name?
"Squinch" is the name I gave to the gesture my dog Gracie makes when she is waking up from a deep sleep. It's a kind of front-paw stretch that starts up around the eyes and then progresses out as far as her front legs will reach. It turns out that word actually has a real meaning, something architectural.
Do you play live?
I do play live, but not currently my own songs. I play keys in a 7-piece band backing up a funk/soul/R&B singer who goes by the name ReelGrace. I hope to put my own band together for my own project within the year.
Your influences?
Everything I've ever heard, but the biggies are Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, King Crimson, Weather Report, etc.
Equipment used:
Everything is recorded in Cakewalk's Sonar software (on a home-made, Athlon-powered DAW), through an M-Audio Delta 66 audio card and the M-Audio Omni I/O. Mastering and some editing are done on Syntrillium CoolEdit 2000. All effects are software plug-ins. Microphones are Marshall MXL 2001 and 603. Guitars are Larrivee D-02 and Fender Telecaster (through a Fender Princeton 65). Bass is Schecter through a SansAmp Bass Driver. Keys are Roland XP-30, sometimes triggered by a Kurzweil SP88x. Drums are sequenced using the Roland keyboard triggering the Fxpansion DR-008 drum sample player. I monitor through Alesis M1MarkII Actives and Sennheiser HD280 headphones. Nothing too fancy here.
