My name is Shawn Udell Jackson, also known as DJ Nyke ( pronouced Nike ) or Blakjak da Assassin.
Why this name?
My name was given to me in 1995 by fellow Marine recruits before we actually reached boot camp in San Diego. After boot camp, the name Nike ( because of the way I was dressed ) stuck as my nickname... no matter how much I intially protested. I was stationed in Japan and starting DJing there, when a friend and fellow DJ, decided to put DJ Nike on the flyers. It just stuck after that. I changed the spelling to Nyke, which is an acronym for Now Ya Killin' Everybody. Not a literally killing, but because I murder everyone that battles me with my lyrical prowess. Although I'm and MC as well as DJ, for the business purposes I choose to use the DJ title in my name. I produce some of my tracks as well.
Do you play live?
I play locally ( Casper, WY ). I've opened for platinum selling artist here and in Michigan, where I grew up. I've opened shows for Mystikal and Pete Pablo and others, in addition to doing shows in Okinawa, Japan while I was stationed there. Nowadays though, I mostly do local shows with the group I'm in called SMK ( Suicide Mafia Kings ).
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It makes the industry/record companies have to re-think the entire money making aspects of selling records. I think it's good actually. It's common knowledge, the majority of record sales money goes to the record company, not the artist. The internet makes it easier to get new and old music instantly.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Without a doubt. I think that's every artist/ musicians goal. The majors is the best and the easiest way to be heard by the world at large.
Your influences?
I'm a product of East Coast hip-hop. Growing up in Flint, Michigan... that's like the center of the country, so we're pretty split on influences. But my major ones are the Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie. And as far as old school, Slick Rick, Rakim, KRS-ONE, Public Enemy, Digable Planets, Das EFX, etc.
Right now though, I'm really feeling the Harlem Diplomats ( Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, JR Writer, etc. ). They have tight flow styles and there beat choices are/used to butta! Not to mention their entire sense of style. Fly!!! DIPSET bi***! Holla at cha boy boy, Killa!
