Somewhere Far is a piano-driven rock trio which incorporates elements of Jazz,Rock,Classical and Contemporary by using only piano, bass, and drums. Powered with no guitar, this trio uses sophisticated rhythms, catchy lyrics and a lot of amusing harmonies to form their unique sound. Tastefully comparable to Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, Billy Joel, but with a sideways-modern twist. These guys have strong goals for their music as they look to share it with the world. As they head into their second year, with almost two full albums and a cushion of many solid live performances, these guys look forward to taking their music out of Boise,Idaho. please check out wwww.somewherefarmusic.com for information about the band
Why this name?
bass player, Terry Smith was writing a song on guitar back in the Fall of 2004. The song's name was " Somewhere Far." The song was about getting out of where we are and experiencing all there is to do somewhere far away. We were thinking of a name at the time, and he brought that name to our attention. So thats really how it started. I know, pretty boring, but, I guess we could of made some garbage up.
Do you play live?
We play live constantly. In February 2006 , it will be a full year with all 3 of us playing shows together. Out of those, we will hit around 30 shows. Among them, we have played Boise's music venues such as The Big Easy, The Bouquet, The Venue, etc.. we have played free shows in the park to help raise money for the needy, and a many more. Once again. every show date is available on our website." We love playing live, love sharing our excitment with people. Drunk people or non-drunk people, we've played for all. I think our best live performance was the Summer of 2005. We played at " The Big Easy." This is Boise's hottest music venue. The show was great, and people seemed to really enjoy our sound. Alos, it was nice to play a stage with really good sound.(technical).
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Music industry is constantly changing and molding into a different shape and size. As technology advances, so does the market. What that means is access to music also changes. For instance, before the internet, Bands and artists brought in a good amount of revenue off of their cd sales. But with the ability to download songs so easily for either nothing or close to, the avenue for a market has shrunk. Though, in the flip side, since the industry is changing, they are relying more on the internet in order to sample new music from musicians like ourselves. We believe the internet and the whole Mp3 download process helps artists get fans and more importantly, it helps get their name out.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
We would sign a deal if we felt that the deal presented was legit and an asset to our success.
Band History:
Somewhere Far is a piano-driven trio which incorporates jazz, rock, and pop into their style. This group consists of three members. Josh Olswanger(piano, vocals), Terry Smith( bass guitar, vocals), and Adam Brimhall( drums, vocals). This group was formed in the Fall of 2004 when Josh ran into Terry while taking some classes at school. They started Somewhere Far and recorded a first attempt-experimental album using Paul Bork for Drum tracks. That album, “Another Day,” was recorded, mixed and mastered in American Audio, located in Caldwell, Idaho. The album was released in late December of 2004, and is now available at the Record Exchange. In early January, Somewhere Far found an old friend, Adam Brimhall, who joined the band shortly after. Somewhere Far played their first show on February 3rd, 2005, and since then has played close to 30 shows and has almost recorded two recordings in a one year span . Somewhere Far has plans in the near future to start sharing their music with the world. Before that happens, they need everyone to come to shows and experience a real energetic and entertaining musical experience. Spread the word to your friends, and please check the shows page for all upcoming shows.
Your influences?
We dig influeces from so many directions. Since we are a piano rock band, bands and artists such as Ben Folds(Five), Billy Joel, Elton John ar every influential. Brian Wilson has been a huge inspiration, along with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, etc.. Anyone who makes beautiful music that can send chills down your spine but doesn"t change their images to be someone else. They should be able to walk on stage with a t-shirt and jeans and be able to rock a crowd. Its not about image, its about the love of the music. Always!
Favorite spot?
Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles. Big city atmosphere, where there is a lot of history and cultural diversity.
Anything else...?
We are inspired to write music that will change the music industry for the better, change someone's outlook on life, or maybe have them see something in a differnet life. Making great songs to share with everyone and putting on exciting live performances is what we strive for. We will soon introduce the world to Somehwere Far. www.somewherefarmusic.com
