Asterales is a keyboard player from Kansas City MO via Lawrence KS via Kansas City MO. Make sense? I grew up in KC, went to school at KU, and now I live back in KC after a long stint in Lawrence. Although I play all different styles of music in many different bands, Asterales is mainly electronica; ambient, downtempo, melodic and poppy, and some of my influences are Boards of Canada, Imogene Heap, Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Telfon Tel Aviv, Bangin X Numbers, Bjork, The Album Leaf, Tortoise, etc and etc... In February, I did the RPM Challenge, where the goal is to write, record, and basically create an album in a month. I will be posting songs from that shortly. It was a ton of fun, hard work, late nights and yielded some good tracks, although admittedly some were rushed and I had to cut corners in order to be able to meet the deadline. The album art was done by the wonderful and talented Ms Callie Tackett of Mixtape Photo. I'm also working on a full length record I hope to release later this fall on Mixtape Meditation with some help in the production and mixing department from Jerett Fulton and Ben Jackson of Mixtape Soundlab. It will include tracks that have been in the stable for quite some time along with some retooled and remixed songs that are up on this site right now. I try to keep up on all the websites and whathaveyou's but usually the updates are sporadic and usually involve me splattering a whole bunch of info about the happenings of late so contact me if you want to know what's up, and please please please let me know if you are enjoying what you're hearing and perhaps what I could do better.. that's all for now!
Why this name?
Asterales is the name for a larger family of flowers that include the sunflower, state flower of Kansas. Pretty damn neat.
Do you play live?
I've played live once, basically playing a slightly edited playlist off iTunes. In the future I would like to play more of the parts myself and integrate a live band. Baby steps. However I do play in several different groups of varying styles of music.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it makes it easier for people of like minds to seek each other out as well as create demand for artists who might not ever be known outside of their small geographic area. It helps the smaller, independent artist, who has more to gain by the widespread and free dissemination of their music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of course if it made sense. It would be hard to say no to the opportunity to earn a living making music...
Your influences?
pink floyd, radiohead, sigur ros, oval, autechre, amon tobin, pole, the album leaf, boards of canada, dj shadow
Favorite spot?
